This story should become a legendary fairy tale of Good VS Evil ! Because eventually Good (Sony) will always triumph over Evil (M$).

Cheaper console, cheaper construction.

More expensive when you've replaced one out of warranty or paid for a couple of extended warranties.

My PS3 just killed my 360

I keep my PS3 and my Xbox 360 in an entertainment unit in the living room. It's a big wooden thing with glass doors, and while it looks cool, I guess it's not exactly what I'd cool well ventilated.

Anyway, this morning at some ungodly hour, both my kids got up and wanted to play videogames. My older son wanted to play Cars while my little guy wanted to watch, and fiddle with another controller while pretending to play. The pretend option turned out to be the Sixaxis (this is relevant, I'll come back to it.)

Now, the 360 on it's own doesn't run so hot that it can't handle being in the entertainment unit with the door shut. I've had it on for hours and hours and hours before, and it never gets so hot that the fan goes into turbo bastard mode. The PS3, on the other hand, is another story. If I keep that sucker in a confined space for too long, I fear for the safety of my family. Hence, whenever we play PS3 games...the door to the unit stays open.

So (back to the narrative) while pretending to play along with his brother, my little guy hits the PS button, and the PS3 springs to life, inside the closed entertainment unit, unbeknown to Mrs. D and myself.

Needless to say, temperatures rise, fans kick in, then more fans kick in, then some new, untold level of nuclear reactor-grade cooling kicks in deep within the bowels of the PS3, and the first thing I know of this is when a little voice cries, "Dad, something's wrong with my game."

Conditions in the confined space had become so super-heated that the 360 red-ringed out, big time.

So. Bottom line, my PS3 killed my 360. I have learned a very valuable lesson from this.

Well in any case turning on your 360 and leaving it in an enclosed space like that is never good. A lot of times (even with computers) its heat over time that kills the machine so when he states

"Now, the 360 on it's own doesn't run so hot that it can't handle being in the entertainment unit with the door shut. I've had it on for hours and hours and hours before, and it never gets so hot that the fan goes into turbo bastard mode."

the fact that he did that is probably more what killed it then the ps3. Greater amounts of heat over extended periods of time is never good for any piece of consumer electronics hardware. Its the same as someones computer dieing after 4 years the inside of it gets so dusty, and the fans get blocked hence more heat inside the machine. Not enough heat to kill it instantly but definitely enough to kill it over time. So it probably was a combination of him closing the door and running the 360 over time, and the ps3's heat together is what killed his 360.

Wow. So the thermal displacement equipment (read fans) are compared, the PS3 has the better hardware. That thing must have a supercharger on it. I'd be tempted to buy one just to water cool the thing.

Never have your console on without ventaillaion. You need clearence space around any console. I don't have an xbox 360 so I can't say if all the overheating issues that I have read are true or not, however compared to a playstation 3, there's a difference. The playstation 3 has no overheating problems what so ever as I haven't read one article since the ps3 came out about any machines breaking.

What was the guy thinking turning it on without opening the doors or have the fan snap-on installed on the X-Box?

Basically the PS3 euthanized the X-Box 360.

Amazingly enough, once source of heat, the power supply, isn't even inside the Xbox 360 (unlike the PS/3).

You should never ever have any console turned on with clearence around the machine. If the machine is in an enclosed space of any kind, you're asking for trouble.
