Default Scott Derrickson to Helm Dann Simmons' "Hyperion"

From Variety...

Quote:
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" helmer Scott Derrickson is set to direct "Hyperion Cantos" for Warner Bros. and GK Films.

Derrickson boards a project that will take two Dan Simmons sci-fi novels -- "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion" -- and meld them into one film being scripted by Trevor Sands.

Story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.

Sands co-wrote and directed the 2002 film "Inside." Recently he's worked on Dimension's "Six Million Dollar Man" and adapted the David Brin sci-fi novel "Startide Rising" for Paramount.

Derrickson is also attached to direct "Paradise Lost" at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Derrickson also co-scripted "Devil's Knot" for Dimension Films with Paul Boardman, his writing partner on "The Exorcism of Emily Rose."

King just wrapped "Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson.

I know a lot of people like the Science Fiction work of Dan Simmons, but I just can't get into it. I really love his horror novels though and would rather see one of those made into a film. Summer of Night was just awesome as was Carrion Comfort. The Song of Kali is quite disturbing, especially the ending and would make a great film.

I am with you, tried reading Hyperion (and I am a huge reader of scifi) I had to force myself to finish it, just could not get into the story. I will probably watch the movie when it come's out.

I started reading it, but I just couldn't. I don't read a lot of science fiction, but I thought since it was Dan Simmons, I could do it, but I was wrong. A lot of people consider these novels to be great. I have also read The Terror, which is not exactly a horror novel and really liked it. I haven't read any of his detective novels either.

Someone else I really like and thing they should make movies of his books is Robert R McCammon. I had heard at one time they were in talks with making a movie out of MINE, but that was over a decade ago and must have fallen through the cracks.
