Default Sound in black hawk down

The sound track has a lot of activity, really immersive experience.
but gun shots are not as loud or have much bass to it compared to new movies like die hard or taken.

When the black hawk hits the ground or rocket hits there isn't as big of a bass as I expected.

I will try again after when I get the 12" sub, but I read review that says it has alot of LFE but I don't find this the case. The PCM track seems to be quieter so i have to turn it a few db higher?

How are you running your sound to your receiver?

Maybe someone can help you if you give us your specs.

Wow. Sounds like you have a great set up. (no pun)
This movie has always sounded amazing for me, every little shell casing that drops, the helicopters, etc.

Maybe the player isn't set up correctly for the output settings? I don't know. Someone else will surely know.

I read an article about how adding subs can cause you to cancel out certain frequencies. I see you have 3 subs, maybe that's causing it? It's also possible that you're not hearing/feeling frequencies below a certain point which can happen on subs below 10"... I don't know though, I am just tossing ideas out there.

Small arms fire really shouldn't have much bass at all. It always irks me when I see a movie, a character fires, say, a 9mm and the floor shakes.

That is true and I think this was the director's intention, they are firing assault rifles out in the open with alot going on, it's not supposes to be in- your-gut kind of sound.

The heli fly bys have nice bass though. Can't wait to get my sub so I can replace my small ones. On my 2 subs now I adjusted the phase on one of them so they did not cancel out.. rather have one big sub that does the job though.

My speaker are "small" crossed at 80hz.

What player are you using? If PS3, have you switched the audio to LPCM so you can hear DTS HD and Dolby True?

Sony BDP-S360 player, everything send out to receiver to do processing
This movie has LPCM 5.1, btw..

I guess I am saying it sounds different from movies like die hard 4.0, desparado etc

to elaborate, these are your crossover settings, determining the bass management you'd like to apply to your current setup.

we have a sticky on how to handle this in the audio section, for further reading.

for the meantime, set
- speaker size to SMALL
- crossover settings to 80hz
- turn the subwoofers crossover settings (NOT the volume or gain) to its maximum (probably at 120hz)

in a nutshell, you are diverting the lower frequencies that your current speakers can or cannot handle, and handing it over to the subwoofer to take care of.

I agree... kind of. I watched Black Hawk Down last week, and I thought some of the scenes didn't hit as hard as I expected, but I blame that more on my expectations. Realistically, I thought it was an excellent sound track, we probably just expected overkill for a modern war flick.

The sound design of this film is extremely intricate and realistic. The gunshots sound like real gunshots, not the booming gunshots you hear in most movies where the designers add layers upon layers of different sounds to create a loud booming sound whenever a gun is fired. BHD's gunshots are very accurate. It's intentional.

I found the sound in Blackhawk Down to be really good. Don't forget the film is a bit older now, and it was also a very early Blu-Ray release. Even so, it rocks my system!
On a note about settings, i actually found that my amp automatically set the speakers up too cautiously, sending most sounds to the sub. I had to go in and manually ramp up the front and side channels to achieve a more immersive soundstage. This helped no end in bringing lower frequency sounds to life.

People complained about the LFE in BHD ever since it was released on DVD. I'm not surprised the BD is no different. As others have noted, the sound design in this movie was striving for realism. Small arms fire wont kick you in the gut but it will be loud. The explostions and crashes were very good and had some nice LFE, however.

If you think this has anemic LFE, compare it to Final Fantasy: Advent Children that's a movie where the LFE was really disappointing.

Also you are running smaller subs. The 8 is the largest and might not be able to hit the lower frequencies like a 10 or 12. I personally havent seen BHD on blu but the crossover range might be what you are missing.
