Default Film piracy is now a misdemeanor in NYC

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/9624.cfm

Quote:
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently just signed a legislation that will upgrade film piracy from a simple violation with a $250 fine to a misdemeanor that will carry a maximum of six months in prison and a penalty of up to $5000.

The signing comes on the heels of the MPAA claiming that 40 percent of camcorded films come from NYC movie theaters.

Yep. I guess the other 10% is coming from there own studio people. Those are the best quality boot legs...just like store bought DVD titles (I heard...lol). They need to crack down on those poeple.

Some of the bootlegs we get here gave a title across the bottom every several minutes which says something like, "For your consideration. Property of Sony Pictures."

I guess there are preview DVDs sent out to theaters as promotional items.

Yea, studios send out "screeners" before the theatrical or DVD release, for different reasons. Usually it's for reviewers (for newspapers, and people who vote for awards). When the piracy started getting bad, I remember news stories about how some studios were going to send out fewer screeners to guard against this problem, but it doesn't seem to have done much.
