Thumbs up Sony launches slim TV

Quote:
SONY will today launch the world's thinnest telly - slimmer even than a slice of toast. The £3,000 TV, the latest in the Japanese firm's Bravia range, is just 9.9mm thick. That is 60 TIMES slimmer than a typical set from the 1950s. It is so thin because tiny LED lights usually illuminating the flat screen from behind have been placed round the sides.

WOW!!! Sony leading the way to innovation.

So, the 6.5mm Samsung doesn't count? How about the 9mm Pioneer Plasma?

Maybe it's just me but when TVs get thinner than 1" that's too thin for me. I don't want a TV that I can break up like a cookie.

Yeah that's a little too thin, I like how the stand itself (pardon pun) "stands out" in the picture, good stuff though.

i think the point is to show that technology is advancing, it is probably not practical for most of us but companies want to show their capabilities when it comes to R&D

I read that there are flexible OLED protos less than 1mm.

OLED has a much higher contrast ratio than LCD and plasma, uses far less power (no backlight), but currently has a shorter lifespan and cost much more. OLED also has the potential to be used in volumetric displays (3D). Those are some points. I imagine we will start seeing more commercial OLED in the next 5 years.

I dont understand why the LED's has to be around the edges to get a thin display. samsung is doing the samething with there new models, they call it edge lit LED. local dimming is better i think, LG has a thin display coming out this year with 240 dimming zones. so why the hell cant samsung and sony do the same.
