Default Not getting surround from DTS-HD Master audio discs in my setup

Let me preface by saying I don't have a receiver that supports DTS-HD audio. Don't have the money for one yet, so let me explain my system and what's going on.

-PS3 connected to LCD TV via HDMI.
-LCD's optical audio out to home theater (it does not have HDMI input)
-Home theater is nothing special. Just an LG LHT854. It does support DTS decoding and Dolby Digital 5.1 among others. Only has one optical audio in plus component inputs.

-PS3 audio settings is set to HDMI out and it doesn't seem to matter if I choose bitstream or Linear PCM.

Whenever I watch a movie that only has DTS-HD Master Audio I cannot hear surround. Only comes out of the front three speakers. For instance Band of Brothers or Death Race which I just watched. Any other Dolby Digital movie it sounds fine.

Any suggestions other than buying a receiver that supports DTS-HD? Or is the lack of HDMI input on the LG with my setup? I can't go optical out from the PS3 because I connect all devices (PS3, 360, Direct TV, and Apple TV) to the TV and then go optical out from TV to the LG.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

do you have to have the optical running from the tv to the receiver?...probably not. You may just want to run the optical directly from the PS3 to your receiver, and if sound from your tv being heard on your speakers is a must, then just use component or digital coax if your receiver has an input for that. Then change your settings on the PS3 for audio output of optical>bitstream. You should at least get regular DTS then, and from all speakers. If not, then you need to check out the settings of your receiver. Your receiver may be on some setting such as Pro Logic, which isn't really sending seperate signals to each speaker, it's kind of simulating it.

Run the optical directly to your receiver from the PS3. Your TV doesn't passthrough the DTS bitstream.

Yes, the optical cable is running from the TV to the receiver. didn't know that kefrank, so that's the issue. I can run component out from the TV to the receiver as well. Though that doesn't help as much for the 360, direct tv and the apple tv but I guess it's a trade off for now until I can get a receiver with HDMI inputs.

Without an HDMI capable receiver you're not going to get DTS HD-MA no matter what you do. Best you'll get it regular DTS, which is fine, I'm just clarifying things since you're title reads that you can't get DTS HD-MA.

What's the difference between DTS and DTS-HD MA? Is it glaring? In other words, are the DTS tracks on Blu-ray upgraded, or is it just the same old DVD version?

Just run your HDMI to the T.V. and run optical to the receiver and turn your speakers on the T.V. off and you should be set to at least have some surround sound.

Yes. I just want DTS surround for now when watching a movie that is DTS-HD. Thanks.

That's what I currently do, and no, still no sound from the REAR speakers when watching a movie that is DTS-HD. I get center and fronts only.

I believe he means run optical directly from the PS3 to the receiver, as I mentioned previously.

yes, like I said quite earlier, don't run audio to your tv, run it directly to your receiver. If you still have issues, then you need to expore the features of your receiver to see what settings are locked in, and probably change them.

That did the trick. But now my other devices have to run over component audio...guess it'll be time to pony up for an hdmi receiver soon. Though I want one with DTS-HD support, my wallet might just settle for one without it.

just did a search of your system, and now I see what you mean by the limitations of inputs on that receiver. You should be able to upgrade the receiver for fairly inexpensive, just depends on what you want out of it. As the PS3 will do all the HD audio converting for you, you won't need a receiver with with DTS or TrueHD decoding...just needs the HDMI input for the PS3. Also most receivers within that past couple years offer an array of inputs for digital coax and optical, so you should get set with everything else you own. Look at Onkyo 606 if budget is an issue. There are piles of threads on that receiver and many others on this site. Good luck!

Thanks for advice in this thread. As for my future purchase I'm still not sure. My knowledge of these new codecs is very limited so bear with me. Are you saying that I don't need to buy a receiver that decodes True HD or DTS-HD because the PS3 will decode it and that all I need is an HDMI receiver that supports DTS to get HD audio? I thought the receiver would need to have those specs but I guess that's for players that don't do the decoding? Lastly, how do I ensure a receiver I may be looking at passes through the audio as well as the video through HDMI?

The PS3 internally decodes TrueHD and DTS-HD MA and sends the uncompressed PCM to the receiver over HDMI, so you only need a receiver that can handle multi-channel PCM input over HDMI (there are tons from the last few years). The receiver does not need to have TrueHD or DTS-HD MA decoding (or decoding of any kind for that matter, though pretty much every receiver has DD and DTS decoding).

If you are looking for an inexpensive receiver to go with the decoding of the PS3, the Sony STR-DG720 can be found for cheap. It will play the PCM sent from the PS3 and you will get hi-def audio.

Thanks, the Sony looks like it would do the job! Only looks like I'll also need a powered subwoofer with it.

get a splitter for the optical input
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

you can connect 2 things into the optical input(ps3 & switch between cable box & 360)

just make sure to buy enough optical cables(read customer reviews)

it will work for now, but go buy a better receiver for now and keep using the speakers you have until you can buy better ones

MAYBE if you buy 2 splitters you can connect 3 into 1??!!
if it doesnt work then return it

if you buy 2 splitters & the right amount of optical cables = you can have cable, ps3 & 360 all hooked up to 1 optical input

Woah. I finally watched a movie with the PS3 optical out to the HTIB directly instead of running it through the TV. It was Appaloosa. What a difference DTS audio made over what I had before! Can't imagine what the difference will be once I have the Sony and am listening to HD audio.
