Unhappy Ok,so my 2 1/2 yr old PS3 started getting hot.....and noisy

Has anyone experienced this isssue after a year or 2 of use? I could be wrong and just never have noticed it. But my PS3 gets very hot and noisy. And very hot at that. And I know the intercooler will potentially break my system down. So what do I do?

Make sure it has good ventilation.

Do you do folding@home? Even though it's for a good cause, I tend not to run it 24/7.

Mine has been doing that since I bought it, you mean that's not normal? It blows out hot air, and about 45 minutes to an hour in it starts to make more noise. Like the fan/system is working harder.

Sounds like you should buy an external hard drive for backups just in case. That goes for everyone actually. Its always good to keep backups of your system.

If you noticed it's getting hotter and noisier then before, maybe it got some dust inside of it. Try cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner before anything.

SlasherCinema just joined to troll. Did he just say he bought a sony blu ray player for his DVDS? He is so badass!

maybe there's lots of dust inside, try a mall vacuum cleaner to remove the dust inside (when the PS3 is off)

I love when my posts get edited for no reason....why don't you guys stop taking your "hobby" so seriously.

I didn't even say anything that warranted an edit..

You quoted a troll (somebody intentionally causing trouble), making it more difficult to clean up the mess he caused.

Nothing relevant to the thread was removed.

That means the cooling system isn't functioning properly. The PS3 is having to kick up the fan to full RPM to try to keep the temperature down.

You need to clean out the vents. Use a vacuum cleaner on the vents first. Clean out any visible dust. And then use a can of compressed air to blast air into each of the vents at various angles until it's not blowing out dust anymore. Be careful to keep the air can facing upright while you do this (if you turn the can upsidedown, it will fire propellent liquid into the PS3 which is bad, and you can hurt yourself with the splatter).

This issue is not unique to the PS3. Any air cooled electronic device, such as laptop, desktop computer, DVR, many modern TVs, etc needs to be periodically cleaned in the same manner. I recently had to perform this procedure on my work laptop because it was overheating and crashing. Clean it out, and it works like new again.

You should also check the location of the PS3, btw. Are the vents blocked by nearby obstructions? Is it sitting on carpet? Is it in an enclosed area with restricted air flow? Under these conditions, the cooling system can be overtaxed even when the vents are clean.

Also consider that if your PS3 is sitting somewhere where it's going to suck in a lot of dust, you're going to have to clean it out more often.

Again, none of this advice is specific to the PS3. This is care and feeding of any air cooled electronic device.

That was excellent advice that everyone should follow. I let mine go for a while, and I noticed a big difference when I vacuumed out all of my vents. It runs much cooler and quieter whenever I clean it.

if its already passed the warranty, you can open it and use Dust off to blow it off.. just never use Dust off when its closed cause youre causing more damge by blowing into the system instead of off/out

I agree that this approach is the ultimate cleaning. However, I would not recommend it to anyone who wasn't technically savvy. The average person may do harm to their unit if they open it up.

I'm curious why you think that blowing air backward through the vents will cause damage? There's nothing in there that's going to break because the air flowed the other direction. It's not an automotive engine.

Blowing compressed air into the vents is the best and most effective means of cleaning the system out short of taking it apart. Vacuuming the vents will also help, but won't dislodge most of the accumulated dust in the system.

Not really. If you follow my guide (located in my signature) anyone who knows how to operate a screwdriver can easily open their PS3.

Keep the dust away.

In my case, I don't have air conditioning in my house.

In the winter, the PS/3 runs pretty quietly. In the summer when the house gets up to 80 or 85 F, then the PS/3 runs the fan a lot more often and then I do notice the extra noise.

Also, keep some area around the PS/3 free for ventilation.

I agree. I had mine open to replace a laser, amazing how much buildup it had in it. I am a smoker so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. But like Xerios said. If it's not under warranty, opening it up and blasting the buildup out really helps.

i havent opened mine (yet) but ive opened up laptops and other electronic items that are compact. The main thing i would say is make sure you blow out the heatsink over the cpu.. thats what generates the most heat.
