Default coaxial or optical digital audio out

I have a 42lg60, it has 2 outputs; coaxial, and optical. Which one is better? I am thinking of buying a new receiver. Do all receivers have both inputs?

Optical is better, with faster throughput, and it's immune to any kind of interference.

Just about all new receivers have multiple inputs for both types.

Unless you have a serious RF interference problem always use coax, it has a better connector and avoids the electrical signal to light impulse and back conversion cycle, also you can run it around corners without issue.

Can someone please elaborate? I have used an optical audio connection from player to receiver on my home theater for years and have had nothing but pristine audio quality from it, without lag (obviously not lossless, but that's changing soon).

With optical, you're going from a digital or analog circuit (depending on the source - digital for CD's, analog from LP's or tapes) to an optical encoder, then down the light pipe, to something that re-encodes for going back to copper, to whatever converts digital copper signals back to analog for playback.

Any weak link in there can cause problems, but most of those were solved a while back. Some folks don't trust the encoders, as there have been problems with interference on either side where there's copper.

I've had good luck with it, overall. Some haven't, and would rather stay all copper with, essentially, RCA cables between units. It depends on how "old school" you are.

plus the fact that optical cables sometimes get kinked or what not.

all in all, its basically the same signal, no matter how you put it. same bandwidth. same detail. no degredation.

either you get a signal or not.

MOST receivers, especially the newer models (when i say new i mean 2000 onwards) have em.

Read A Guide to Optical, Coaxial, & Speaker Cables. It has a sticky in the Audio section.

use either one you like.. this debate will never end. I use both types.. and they both work equally as well. and yeah all receivers have both types of digital inputs.

I use Digital coax cable on my Cd player , and I'm very happy with it , I just upgraded from a standard monster thx cable. to the Monster Z200D Refference series cable,& belive me there is a difference. I was blown away with the low Bass on the new cable. and overall the sound is just that much better, IMOP. But hey to each is own.

If I don't have a receiver with HDMI-in, or a BD-player with 5.1/7.1 analog out, can I get TrueHD and DTS-HD MA (assuming the player decodes them) using coaxial or optical digital out?

If not, what tracks should I select?

If you are considering buying a new receiver, why in the world would you be worried about lossy audio connections? You have a PS3. At a bare minimum, get a receiver that accepts audio over HDMI so you can enjoy HD audio.

Not one of you is going to call him out on using the audio output from a TV? Seriously? No one's going to tell him that that signal is most likely 2.0 stereo at best?

LOL @ you guys

Started to, but changed it to the whole HD audio recommendation instead. The OP obviously is new to all of this, and we are here to help as best as we can.

Hopefully he also understands that he doesn't need to go out and buy overpriced Monster crap in order to have quality interconnects.

Obviously he needs help, I was just scratching my head why no one seemed to notice that what he's trying is less than ideal
