Although the price has gone up to $179 each, a pair of Polk Audio T90e speakers from Newegg.com would still keep you in budget, and they are a clear step up from Monitor 50s (which are already fine speakers). No shipping on them, either.

I have the T90e speakers and they are quite exquisite. You can check out my gallery photos for a "real world" look at them. I was fortunate enough to get them when they were $129 each, but at $179, they are still well below MSRP and very much worth it.

Here's a link to Newegg's Polk T90e page:

Goto circuit city and see if you can find any deals.

I purchased Klipsch f1's which are regulary 950.00 a pair for 305.00 after tax.
I also bought the f2's for 220.00 regularly 750.00
f1's for 160.00 regularly 550.00

so if circuit city still has anything you might be able to get a good deal

at this price point im assuming we are going for bookshelf speakers.

well worth the $50 dollars more.

RB81s at vanns.com

RB81's

again, as much as price is a defining factor in purchasing speakers, id highly recommend auditioning anything prior to purchase.

regret comes in when you know you have to upgrade that $100 speakers and couldve used it towards buying your 'better' options.

just a thought.

+1 not likely now, but that depends on where you are. I got my TSi 300's for $150 each, the center was $150 and the TSi 100's were $119 a pair. I didn't wait very long for them to be discounted much because I knew someone else would get them. They were all new in box as well

That's $400 for a single speaker. $800 a pair. You can get pretty decent towers for that price.

For $300 to $400 price range, you can also look at these options:

sorry lad, i chose the wrong one then.

id go with the RB61s

rb61

again, id suggest for you to audition these speakers, or any others if ever, before making your purchase. its always a good idea to 'see' how they'd sound for you.

you dont rush when buying a new house, or a new car, why do so with buying yet another investment ya?

theres been numerous threads 'bout suggesting a good set of fronts to people on this forum, some listen, some dont. all in all a few components play in order in my book

- making sure you invest as much as you can in your LCR (left, center and right) speakers. This is your soundstage.
- R&A - Research and Audition. Research. Research. Research. Audition audition audition.
- as ive mentioned above, dont rush into purchasing speakers. this is an investment. remember when you upgraded from your 200 hundred dollar speakers? you couldve used that money towards topping what you 'really wanted' and then some.
- physics denotes that you cannot get outstanding sound from a 2.5 driver compared to a 6.5 driver. so if you go satellites, dont expect the 'best' quality you can get. bookshelves are my preferred starting point.
- when purchasing speakers, remember, these are not the only conditions you have to 'spend' on - cabling, speaker terminals, etc.
- acoustics lies second to speakers (with all due respect to acoustics).

Great speakers are nothing without proper acoustic treatments done to improve the interaction of sound and its environment.

as always, i would like to include crackinhedz sticky here for referral.

Call 6th Ave. and see if the Def Tech sale is still on. Dozens of guys in the AVS forum picked up a pair of sm450 speakers for $249, amazing deal since they list for 700. I got a pair off the 350's last year and they are outstanding.

Maybe a few days ago but not now. I saw the same listing, but it was for 1 Single speaker. Trust me, I "Tried" Updating my quantity in my cart, said "Unavailable quantity".

But now here's what it says for the Monitor 50 Open Box:

Deactivated Item

I love Def Techs- seriously, I'm trying to score myself some towers- but don't believe their low-end specs. For whatever reason they're really exaggerated as compared to the rest of the industry. I mean, my sub is rated at that. Simple physics dictates that's not very realistic. Is it 24hz at +/-10db?

They are great quality speakers though.

The Def Tech SM 450 sale is long gone. I contacted the store daily to ask about their inventory and they sold out about 1 week ago. $250 for a pair of 450s was a steal and a great pair of bookshelfs.

I just got my Athena LS-300 towers yesterday and very satisfied with the sound. Then again, this is my first pair of towers but for $200 shipped, I think it's a great deal. I don't think you'll need a separate sub because the towers give off decent bass.
