Want a receiver in the $350-$450 range, that utilizes HDMI audio...

I've seen so many, but the reviews all say "only passes HDMI audio through to TV." Makes no sense to me why it would do that.

Let me also say that I am aware of the Sony 720, but I read that it only can use 8ohm speakers, and my speakers are all less than 8ohm.

I would look at the Yamaha 663 sense it has pre-outs and you could always hook up a seperate amp later on to drive your speakers.

I'd think the Yamaha 663 or Onkyo 606 would fit what he is looking for.

Yes, but if he has 4ohm speakers, then it will fry that Onkyo. The 606 doesn't do so well with 4ohm speakers. Same can be said about the Yamaha, but not as bad. The 606 doesn't have pre-outs to hook up a seperate amp to drive the 4ohm speakers more efficiently. That's why I vote 663

I actually am not sure what my speakers are. I have an old, cheap HTiB. My manual has something about 7 ohm, but I haven't checked the speakers.

Assuming, for the sake of argument, that my 5 speakers are all 6 ohm, would they fry any of the suggestions you made above (including the Sony 720, which says something like "Impedance use 8 - 16 ohm" on the rear of the unit)?

6 ohms would work well with either the Onkyo or the Yamaha and wouldn't fry the Reciever. Just don't expect to drive 4ohm speakers with either unit for extended periods of time. And the Yamaha can be found for cheaper online. You just have to search around for it. Right now it's on Amazon for $500 shipped. If you are going to use the HTiB speakers, I would suggest the either the Sony, Yamaha, or Onkyo. If price is a issue, the Sony would work nice for you and shouldn't be a problem driving your speakers. But if you want something you can build upon in the future and have room for upgrades, the Yamaha would be your best bet. You'll spend extra money right now, but it will pay off in the end. The Onkyo running the middle of the line if you know what I mean.

I also like that Pioneer 1019 when it comes out if you can wait that long. That would give you the most leg room for upgrades and an overall better audio experience. It has a lot of nice features, and for the price range, decent power supply and processing.

UAV tested it with 4-ohm speakers and they only noted the temperature when driving a full 7-speaker array for 2 hours.

Jimmy Buffet's classic song "Margaritaville" sounded lifeless with no room correction, but with Audyssey enabled, Buffet's six-string came alive, and the smooth rhythm of the lyrics had me looking for the tequila and margarita mix. The bass was powerful and dynamic within the 2-channel soundstage. Engaging All-Channel Stereo mode demonstrated the impressive power of the Onkyo's internal amplifiers, which never sounded strained, even at very high volume.

My only real concern is that the TX-SR606 ran hot. After two hours of 7-channel music playback, the external temperature of the unit was 135 degrees Fahrenheit as measured by a Raytek MiniTemp gauge. Granted, I'm running seven 4-ohm speakers (Onkyo rates the unit down to 6 ohms), but I gave the 606 plenty of ventilation. Placing this AVR—or any high-power device—in an enclosed cabinet without adequate ventilation is not recommended, so be sure to plan accordingly. Also, if your speakers have a nominal impedance of 6 ohms or higher, the 606 should not run as hot as it did with my 4-ohm system.

The TX-SR606 doesn't seem to mind running the amps hot and it certainly bests its own specs where power is concerned.

Also, the back of the Yamaha 663 says "If using less than 8 ohm speaker, refer to instruction manual." I can't access the manual, but I wonder what it says. I obviously don't want to buy it, only to find that it won't work.

Preouts let you process the sound w/ an AVR and amplify it w/ an external amplifier.

I have the Yammy 883 and by pressing a sequence of buttons you can set it up for 8 ohms or less than 8 ohms, which is what they mean by accessing the manual.

I am not sure but I think when you do your set up with the V663 it will detect what ohms your speaker is and run the set up according to that ohms.
I'll check when I get home to be certain.
