Default Identifying Imaging, Presence, Depth, Soundstage and the like!

This is going to sound like a real noob question coming from someone who has been into Audio for nearly 40 years, but I have real difficulty sometimes identifying certain things that I am hearing or NOT hearing.

The terminology in identifying characteristics of components, mainly sources (TT's/CDP's) and speakers are greatly intertwined. I think I can properly identify them, but I'm not really sure and want to be.

So here is my question.

Can anyone direct me to an article that discusses and/or identifies the various listening characteristics of imaging, presence, depth, soundstage, neutral, warmth, airy, etc, etc, etc.....

I'd be willing to post a thread outlining those specifics as I think it would be a handy tool for others as well.

There might be some good info buried in the forums over at AVGuide.com: www.avguide.com/forum. Robert Harley's books and back issues of TAS also offer some definitions, but they're not very useful for linking to. :-)

Thanks for the feedback Rich!

I'm actually quite surprised that this type of information isn't more readily available, since the terms of reference are quoted in every single audio componant review I have ever read.

I'll keep looking and I'm sure I'll come across something eventually.

I looked at all of those before, but they didn't answer my questions. I'm going to keep looking and maybe contact a few people.

Rich and BD...thanks!

Get a subscription to Stereophile and in a few months you will get the gist of what those terms mean.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and use the Article TOC. This should be very helpful.

I read this sticky today.
http://www.grammy.com/PDFs/Recording...rs/5_1_Rec.pdf

Its pretty informative and offers information about localization, imaging, and mixing. I know you've been working with audio for 40+yrs so I hope this isn't too basic for you.

I read that document yesterday actually. Rather lengthy, but a good read. As far as me having been into audio for 40+ years makes me no expert. Trust me. I still have tons of questions and probably will for the next 40+ years.
