Look at some of those comments. Seems people think they should all be getting something for nothing. "no DVD should be over $5.00." Last time I checked Blockbuster's rental fee is over $5.00 for new release DVDs.

A strong possibility, eh? Yeah, where are those figures located? It's so funny he has the numbers for DVD and not so much Blu-ray and no figures for Digital Downloads. That's just too convenient.

I'm not going to sacrifice 1080P or lossless audio to get it...... but yeah.... the very moment that someone releases a format that I can store on my hdd in a legal and user friendly manner..... I will be all over it. Whether it's streaming, digital download.... whatever it may be. Give me a delivery method that will allow me to store my entire movie collection on a RAID in my network closet..... and hellz yes...... I am there!

If the Blu-ray people were smart... they would head digital DL's and streaming off at the pass... and include the ability to create a 1080P/lossless copy with each blu-ray.

How SWEET would it be if you could buy a blu-ray.... take it home..... pop it in the PS3 and either watch it from the disc...... or copy it to a networked drive? Give us a "Cover Flow" type app for our blu collection..... and when our friends come over for movie night..... we can show them our entire blu collection up on the big screen..... complete with disc covers and film descriptions.

The numbers for 2008 are in and they don't look good: DVD sales are now showing the first signs that they're about to go into free-fall, just like sales of CDs did a few years ago.

For the second year running, DVD sales have slipped. After hitting a high of $24.1 billion in 2006, the total sales volume hit $21.6 billion in 2008, an overall decline of about 10 percent off the 2006 high.

DVD's purported savior -- Blu-ray -- has been unable to rise to the rescue so far. Blu-ray (and leftover HD DVD) disc sales hit just $750 million last year, which doesn't nearly make up for the loss in sales of DVD media. Since Blu-ray discs are more expensive than DVDs, the overall unit sales decline is even more worrisome for Hollywood -- and some studios are seeing income plummet accordingly. For example, Fox operating income dropped 72 percent last year after seeing DVD sales fall just 15 percent.

Hits aren't going to save the day, either: Warner Bros. had the #1 selling DVD of 2008, The Dark Knight, but saw overall DVD sales drop 24 percent nonetheless. Disney -- running out of "classics from the vault" to reissue -- had a whopping 33 percent drop in DVD sales last year.

Naturally, the recession is being targeted as the culprit for all the bad news, but pundits say other factors are at play. One big issue? Former Fox and Disney executive Bill Mechanic says that the introduction of Blu-ray media has led studios to radically cut prices on their older DVDs as they attempt to position Blu-ray as a superior good. That plan may have backfired, instead driving consumers to snap up cheap DVDs instead. Says Mechanic, "It’s devalued the libraries. If you can buy Titanic for $4.99 versus $19.99 for a new, but lesser, movie on Blu-ray, consumers will say, 'Well, wait a minute…'"

To be sure, Blu-ray is growing -- up 250 percent since 2007 -- but it still represents less than 3.5 percent of the overall market. Analysts now wonder whether Blu-ray will be able to pick up steam fast enough -- or if the future has already been handed over to online downloading and streaming alternatives. With companies like Netflix rushing into streaming as quickly as possible, that certainly seems like a strong possibility.

Idiot blowhard windbag. Obviously this guy have no clue that the biggest thing holding back Blu-ray are the price point and the catalog of titles currently available.

If the price differences between BDs and DVDs aren't so large, you would get more consumers since the BD players are getting more affordable. As long as DVDs are significantly cheaper than BDs, it would make it difficult for the Joe Schmoe off the street to want to buy since they don't necessarily understand nor care about the advantage of BD over DVD.

Even though more titles are being slated for release on BDs, the number of titles are not large enough to satisfy the consumers. Many of us are still waiting for some well know higher profile movies to be released. On top of it, the continual release and re-release of movies on DVDs is just going to prolong the process of moving on to the new format.

As far as streaming and downloads, we all know that it's a technology that can currently deliver the quality that a BD can. It also does not allow us to own the movie to use as our own leisure any time and as many time as we want.

I'm not sure what the issue is here. I hate change as much as anyone, but there's no doubt Blu-ray will eventually become the standard. What else is there? Let's put it this way. If Blu-ray doesn't take off quickly, then there won't be another optical disc format to replace it. In that eventuality, Blu-ray will eventually become the standard, just slower.

Whether or not it takes off quickly, it will eventually become the standard. The only way it doesn't become the standard is if 1920x1080 suddenly becomes insufficient, which isn't going to happen.

As for downloads, I think they'll inevitably take some chunk of the pie, but people always want something physical to hold onto.

So, I'm not really sure what the issue is. I personally don't want to change to Blu-ray, but I know I'll have to.

JLMTSTT...are you already HD ready?..i.e...Have 1080p HDTV, Lossless audio ready...5.1 surround sound...

if now, then you aren't in a hurry...a lot of people are..they have the technology..and they want to utilize it to its fullest...you need to see and hear Blu-ray to really get it...and, until you have the funds to jump in whole-heartedly, there really isn't a reason to go HD...you know...

I refuse to buy a Blu-Ray player. They are too expensive and what really makes them better? Picture quality? Does everyone in America need their eyes checked? Because my regular DVD looks pretty darn good on my tv.

After reading some of the posts all I could come up with is that Chris Null is succeeding at ensconcing himself as Lord of the Idiots. Some were actually saying there was only a slight difference in PQ between DVD and Blu-Ray...sheeeeeeesh come on people buy some glasses, get with reality. I mean Chris Null is making me believe he was THE guy after the Beatles second album came out that said they wouldn't last.

I personally enjoyed the comments about how blu-ray players would be more of a success if they had integrated the ability to play DVDs without a separate player. I don't have a Yahoo account, but I wish somebody who did would write to these poor, misinformed people and explain that they don't have to "replace their entire DVD collections" because they won't play in their blu-ray player. Seriously, is it that hard to figure out????
