Default Coraline OK for kids?

I saw Coraline yesterday. Stop-motion-animation masterpiece. It was very dark in the final third.

Has anyone taken their kids to see this?

I would like to hear how this movie affected kids of different ages.

There were a few but not many kids when I went, probably around 5 and up to 12 or so. No crying, no complaining, no questions during the film.

Thanks. I am hoping to hear from some parents. It seems like this movie could "stick" with some of the real young ones. As you know, there were some potent images. Nightmares etc...

I am as interested in the answer to your question as you are; I haven't seen it yet and have a 3 year old who loves Corpse Bride.

Sorry I don't have kids, but I would have to assume this wasn't too suitable for the young ones. I went and saw it at 11 at night and didn't see any kids. It was pretty adult in a lot of ways. Granted it would be fine for those parents with mature kids. Like I saw a lot of crazy stuff as a kid and was taught to make the distinction between reality and fantasy. I saw It when I was under 10 LOL. Did anyone else think the old lady at the theater performance was naked?? It looked pretty adult at that point. And pretty disturbing. As far as if anyone is on the fence about going to see it. Don't wait any longer!! This movie was awesome to see on the big screen in 3D, and it was a good story. I don't think many will be disappointed at all. But for the youngens, know that it is a very dark movie. Proceed with caution.

I also wonder about the themes. The "Mom" becoming so so very sinister and her evolution into...well.... what she became, seems like it could terrify a little one. I mean, Mom as the scary villian is a scary concept. I saw Hitchcocks The Birds when I was 8 and it affected me. Anyway, I mostly started this thread out of curiosity and was hopefull that some parents would be able to help out other parents.

Carry on.

I've got two kids- ages 7 and 11. Our entire family loved it. But then again we have always enjoyed all sorts of "dark" movies like this one. (Monster House, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Goosebumps, etc. )
So I guess it depends on the age and what they are accustomed to.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. She wasn't entirely naked! LOL.

I couldn't tell if the 5 year old boy was awake or just perrplexed by it all... I thought the movie bordered on the freaky side, like 'Willy Wonka' is.

I'd be more concerned about people falling asleep. I have a feeling it wouldn't hold certain types of kids' attention.

Maybe I'll change when I finally have a kid but I think parents shelter their children way too much when it comes to 'scary' things like this. I've gladly feed them this along with a helping of classic Disney. I mean, Snow White and Pinocchio had some very dark images. I just don't want me kids falling in love with Shrek and all 3D animated movies that rely on fart jokes.

I took my kids. They were cool with it - no problem. It's dark, yes. But some of the more recent Harry Potter films are even darker and they had no problem with them. When we were buying tickets there was a woman and her son in the lobby who left the previous showing because it was "too weird."

It's not your average sugary Disney-style children's film. But I loved it and my kids did as well. Great eye candy to boot.

Wait... isn't this suppose to be aimed towards kids? It's only PG, and doesn't seem to be as dark as Nightmare Before Christmas.

any movie that has a song about how to try to bump off Santa Claus definately falls into the 'dark' catagory.

I actually went to watch it with my wife and there were several kids there...

A couple with a young one had to leave and a little girl sitting in front of with her parents was scared and crying during the last sequences... after watching it I don't think I'll have my kid watching it in a couple years...

I loved it... but I think it was too dark for kids...

I agree. A kid next to me must have said "I'm scared..." about ten times to his mom. A family or two walked out. It really isn't a kids movie. Total nightmare fuel. I even had a nightmare from the trailer! Hahaha.

You do know that Tim Burton had no involvement in this movie, right?
