I have been looking at the kef, for a while now. I just started looking at the polk monitors now. Which do you recommend?

That you try and listen to both, if you can. I'm personally not familiar with Kef (never got to audition them) but I know that there are enough varieties of Polk out there that you can at least get an idea as to the sound. I listened to some Polk RTi speakers this weekend and while I could definitely tell the difference between them and my Monitor 60's, the overall tonal feel was similar.
Monitors are going to get harder to find now that they're pretty much liquidated from Circuit City and Polk themselves, so if you know of a good deal and decide they're what you want I wouldn't wait too long. |

I like them, personally. You can get the RTiA5 fronts for under $500 for the pair. They sound very clear and a bit warm (like Polks do) but... I like warm. They're not harsh on the ears as I feel that some other speakers are. I don't get fatigued listening to them.
Those Kefs look fantastic. I would definitely check them out if you could. They're a lot more expensive, but typically there's a reason, and Kef is a trusted brand. If you have that much of a disparity between brands (Polk Monitors vs. Kef's iq line) I would recommend to get out and get listening to as many speakers as you can. I'll just toss in the Def Techs BP series as well, since personally I love them. Sounds like you need to narrow down your budget and speaker range a bit. |

I disagree, though they're definitely very similar-sounding. I think there's more there on all frequencies- I listened to my go-to "Hotel California" live song (I swear, everyone has it for demos) and they did a great job with the highs and acoustic guitars.
*edit* This post was in regards to the RTi line, not TSi. My bad. Last edited by aramis109; 02-23-2009 at 07:03 PM. |

I have a 5 speaker KEF system and love it! I auditioned them at a local store and have been nothing but impressed. I heard Polk as well and they weren't bad but I thought the KEFs sounded markedly better. I am actually buying two more KEF speakers tomorrow to go 7.1.

If I can get a pair of the kef iq 8ds, an iq2c, and one iq5 for $550, should I do it? I would still have to buy the other iq5 elsewhere for around $375.

Well, I always recommend listening to speakers before buying in case it may not sound good to you. Speaker preference can be highly subjective. But if you want to go by reviews, I have read glowing reviews of the iQ series since I bought them.
I am actually buying the last two speakers from accessories4less.com. Thay are an authorized KEF dealer and I called them and they said they purchased the entire KEF stock when the recently released the new Q series. I am getting two iQ3s for $300, shipping included. |

The only selection I have to hear are from the best buy in my town. There is not much of a selection of speakers there. So I can really only go off reviews.

I don't have any local stores either. There's one a good 1/2 hour north of my work, but they only sell Jamo these days. |

Polk Audio will confirm if you call that the TSi and the Monitor series are the same except cosmetics.

No it does not have Magnolia. Really they only have Bose and Yamaha there. I am thinking of just building my speaker system slowly. So I may have to go a different route, since The IQ5's are not made anymore. I would like to get all the speakers matching. I am afraid If I picked the IQ5's up and waited awhile, I may not be able to find the same style.
