United Kingdom Red Dwarf: Back to Earth - August 31st

Official News Post

Pre-Order on Amazon (UK)

Although I didn't particularly enjoy this mini-series in comparison to the classic series, I think this maybe worth a watch, and perhaps it might be a bit more enjoyable in HD ;o)

A question, AP2009: I only watched a few minutes of one or two episodes of the old Red Dwarf series (the series wasn't broadcast on any of the local channels, as far as I'm aware, so I only caught a few glimpses on British channels), so my knowledge of the series' back story is pretty much nil.

Can someone like me watch this recent mini-series and actually get some enjoyment out of it, not knowing anything about previous storylines?

I thought it was quite reliant on previous knowledge of the series. The character relationships are an important part of this series, and those were obviously formed in the previous episodes. Also -- and I want to avoid spoilers here, so this will be vague -- one of the major plot mechanics is a follow up from a previous episode.

The last episode is a parody/homage to a classic sci-fi film, so that would be easy to follow at least.

I think you can watch this without awareness of the previous series but you'll find you'll want to then watch the classic episodes to appreciate the story etc which are far far better than this new mini-series ;o)

Hmmm might buy it in the sales if I need to make up a 3 for 2 offer or something, but this was such a disappointment. It looked fantastic, but even the worst episodes of Series 2 or 3 are better than this.

Yeah, I'm with you guys. It was slightly disappointing, but I did like the crossover from Craig Charles' other character from Coronation Street. I don't think the release is worth a buy, unless you're a hardcore Red Dwarf fan.

Agreed, I didn't buy this on DVD so I may as well buy this when it comes down in price as I'd like to at least have them.

on the director commentary track (Reg. 2 DVD) he notes that this was filmed with Red One 4K HiDef cameras - this should look stunning on hidef bluray

I recently picked up the Australian Blu Ray as this site stated it was 50i;

Sadly, it's 60i just like the UK release.
