Default Analyst sez Sony to remove Blu-ray Drive to Lower Costs and Price...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...-of-days-janco

Quote:
PS3 price cut announcement "in the next couple of days" - Janco

The PlayStation 3 could be about to receive a price cut, with Sony due to make an announcement imminently.

That's according to Janco Partners' Mike Hickey, who has said in his latest note to investors that Sony needs to cut USD 100 off the asking price of the luxury console.

"Recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days," wrote Hickey.

"We think the company needs to reduce the current price by USD 100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June at the latest," he added.

Hickey said that without a price cut, the console could stagnate on shelves, prompting publishers to move resources away from PlayStation 3 development.

"If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console."

He also said that there is talk of a PlayStation 3 unit without the Blu-ray drive, although such a console would not be compatible with the PS3 software already on the market.

"We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."
The guy clearly has issue, the BD drive in the PS3 actually costs waaaay less than $100 to produce, and removing it to put a DVD drive in would firstly split the market and make all current games incompatible, and secondly only shave $20-30 off production costs.

****ing .........

Oh wow, that would be suuuuuuuuch a great idea. Make it completely worthless as a forward thinking next gen system. I don't see Sony or ANY company deciding to take a huge leap forward in technology just to take that leap back later in the exact same products lifespan.

Wow he really thinks they would make a DVD only PS3? Say bye to compatibility with all existing PS3 games on the market. Gosh how can he call himself an analyst when he doesn't even know all the current games are on BDs?

Microsoft did it. Why can't Sony?

PS3 Arcade for teh win!

Because gamers don't need a console that can actually play anything.

I'm really not the most PC guy out there, but is the use of "retard" in the title, then 2 more times in the original post, really that necessary? It just comes off as such a juvenile insult, and the "sez" doesn't help out, either. Obviously he's ignorant to the fact that it's not possible to create a PS3 without a Blu-ray drive, but try coming off as a bit more intelligent if you want anyone to take you seriously.

Give me a break with the PC talk. Listen, I have an uncle who has been mentally handicapped all of his life; he cannot even speak. I don't take any offense to what has been said in here; unless someone decides to go full retard on here.

Anyway, the guy obviously doesn't know that if Sony released a PS3 console without the blu-ray drive; their new user base would own an incomplete system. Sony would never do this; it would be two steps back for the company and the product wouldn't stand out from the competition. I think Sony can make a considerable price cut without cutting out the BD drive.

Sorry to be "that guy" that had to say something, but something about it irked me this time around. And it's not just the offensive use of the word, it's just the general tone that comes from a person that uses words like that because they can't find a better way to express how they feel. It reflects poorly on the forum as a whole to any newcomers and it's almost embarassing to even come here when it's accepted so openly.

Yeah this guy shouldn't have a job if this is his honest research lol. PS3 will be fine it just needs alittle bit more sales in all categories but this year is already looking real good for them.

Well, I can agree with that point. It does make the site seem more juvenile.

It irked me, too. It seemed like a middle schooler wrote the post. Took away from the substance of the post, in my opinion.

But, that's what the Internet is for in the end, I guess --- dumbing things down.
