Default Ohms difference between sub and speakers

My Sony SA-W2500 sub is rated at 6 ohms and my speakers are rated at 8 ohms. Is this a problem?

I am not the expert here but it appears they have not responded to your question yet. You really need to list the receiver you are using. The issue is really whether your receiver will support the speakers. When I looked at your listed sub it appears to be a powered subwoofer, is it? If so the 6 ohms rating is for what, a high level input? So another part of your details will be to tell us how you are wiring this subwoofer to your system, subwoofer low power out, or otherwise. In general the ohm mismatch between subwoofer and other speakers in your system would not be significant.

It's an active sub so it's not an issue.

If your subwoofer is powered, it will have its own amplifier and will not affect the receiver.

If your subwoofer is passive (unpowered) and you are using your receiver to power it, then you have to make sure the receiver can handle low impedance speakers. Even if the receiver's manual says that the receiver is for 8ohm speakers, it does not mean that it cannot handle 6 ohm speakers. You just need to turn the volume down and periodically check the receiver to make sure it is not getting too hot. Eventually, you should purchase an external amplifier that can properly handle low impedance speakers.

If a receiver/amplifier can handle 4 ohm or 6 ohm speakers, it does not matter if you mix the different impedance speakers.

I just got my first subwoofers this week, a pair of Acoustic Audio SUB-10s, and they have both the low level, powered subwoofer, input, and access to the speaker windings via high level inputs. It appears to be a dual coil speaker, has two inputs both for high and low level, and even has a low level output which I have daisy-chained from one to the other to use them.

So I wasn't sure if his speaker might have the same wiring options, even if it is powered, it could be connected as a 6 ohm load. I probably shouldn't have responded to the OP's post since I don't have the background in this stuff like you guys do. But I thought asking the OP what kind of receiver he had would help in the overall response. Sorry about confusing the issue.

Congratulations on your subs. Go to the Acoustic Audio thread and post some pictures and comments about your subwoofers there.
