Default Wakfu Series (Kickstarter for Blu-ray and English Dub)

Currently, there is a kickstarter campaign going on for the Wakfu animated series on Blu-ray along with an English dub.

Taken from the page:

Quote:
WAKFU is a French animated series, created by Ankama, acclaimed by critics and audiences. We wish to get closer to the American public, the Asian public... in other words, everyone in the world! That is why we are asking for your support to help us complete the dubbing of the series in English!
Full details through the link:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...nimated-series

I'm sure that there are a few fans here who would like to contribute to the Kickstarter. So far, this is only for the season 1, but if the stretch goals are made, then season 2 as well as the specials will also be included in the set.

It's supposed to ship this week. I've never seen Wakfu, but it looks very interesting and the price was right.

With the lack of communication and past few delays, I'm not really having much hope that it'll ship out anytime soon. Guess we'll see.

Also, for newcomers I would advise against watching the English dub.

[UPDATE 2/25/2025: I no longer own the blu-ray set, so for those sneakin' in my DMs, now you know]

Got my package yesterday, so if nothing else, Ankama is committed to their cause.

Somewhat. I read comments of some users receiving the package without the blu-ray, let alone missing contents that are supposed to be included in their pledge. In that sense, I was lucky enough to get the bare essentials.

Now for the bad news. The video (while 1080p) has some SERIOUS issues with banding. When you fit nine episodes per disc, there's gonna be some video artifact involved, and it's very noticeable on a big screen. There's no lossless audio for the surround sound for any of the season episodes, though there's a Linear PCM 2.0 channel for both dubs; only the three special episodes have lossless surround (that Ankama somehow forgot to include on the past episodes). Even more despairing news, there's no literal subtitles for the French audio; we're stuck with dubtitles, and believe me, there's notable name changes between the two. And even worse, they STILL haven't fixed the audio problems that plagued the dub from the streams.

Y'know, I can deal with the banding, the lossy audio, and I can even bear the grudge of having dubtitles. But damn it, they've done a crap job even with the English subs (both it and the SDH); there's spelling errors, mistaken words, and text that are missing from the lines. Has anyone even proofread the damn subtitles? This is a real sub-par release from the studio. I know I have to take this release with a grain of salt, since Ankama had to hand all the authoring and BD producing all by themselves, but this is crap. And let's not even get to most of the things missing that was suppose to be promised for backers (special thanks, extras, etc).

I'm sorry, I'm just disappointed with the overall presentation and content of the set.

Yeah, haven't been very happy with the way that this Kickstarter has gone, especially since my package arrived without the damn blu-ray set that was the core of this campaign all along.

9 episodes on a single disc is pretty standard for a series, so I think the banding is more to do with the source than the disc compression. No idea about the audio. The uncompressed surround audio track for the first two seasons may not have been available, who knows. The whole dubtitle/subtitle issue is inexcusable though. I thought that the point of one of the stretch goals was to provide accurate subtitling to the French track. Now it looks like even these subs have mistakes in them.

That's disappointing to hear.... Thanks for letting us know.

So, are we supposed to get some sort of email about our package shipping? I hadn't been paying attention to this at all, but I haven't received anything yet.

I never received a shipping notice (Kickstarter creators never seem to do so for me), and it just delivered on my doorstep like magic.

Yea, it's possible that video flaw may be inherent to the source, but darn, it's a distraction compared to what I'm used to with the Korra Blu-Rays.

If the uncompressed audio is unavailable, we wouldn't be having Linear PCMs for the stereo sound. They could easily take that existing audio and remix it for lossless surround. It can be done; I don't know how personally, but it can.

It's kickstarter only for now it seems. Not sure if they'll ever sell it elsewhere or on their own webshop.

Episode 26 is edited. I just learned the truth after comparing its end credits from the blu-ray to the fan subs. Y'know what, this might be the straw that broke my back.

I can't believe they let that one slip past. I don't know who was in charge of putting this set together but they did a real rushed job on it. Also apparently the Nox special has some ghosting issues as well. Maybe they should just correct and replace that disc for anyone that makes the request.

Judging by the comments on the Kickstarter page, this has been (putting it mildly) a bit of a disaster....

Can't wait to see what kind of state of disarray mine turns up in.

I got an email from UPS and received my package 2 days later. The only things missing were a couple of items that Ankama has said will come later. However, I am also bothered by the "dubtitles", and I did not think much of the English dub. The biggest problem for me is that the packaging for the disks is absolute crap.

I finally finished season one. I'm pleasantly surprised that the show turned out to be very enjoyable and pretty (Except for the banding). I watched it in French with English subs. The English dub isn't good. Ruel sounds like Yoda lol.

The quality of the release is indeed a bit disappointing, but it's not that surprising considering how dirt cheap the lowest tier with Blu-ray was which kinda raised a flag. The dubtitles aren't great, but the encoding mistakes are IMO even worse. Ankama should at the very least redo disc 3, but I can't see that happening. Disc 1 has a minor issue on episode 5, but the issues on disc 3 bother me even more. It sucks that the credits of episode 26 is incomplete, but I also noticed an audio drop out on the DTS track of like half a second on ep 26. There's no talking in that scene so it's not that bad. And the ghosting is terrible on the Noximillian OVA.

EDIT: I'm reading this in 2019 and forgot what the issue was in ep.5 (or maybe there wasn't a problem?). Maybe I should I do a rewatch.

Wakfu season 4 kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ries-season-4/

Includes a Blu-ray tier. Still no sign of a season 3 Blu-ray however.

Kickstarter resulted in a shit product? Color me surprised!

That's what you get for giving to e-beggars. It's a scam to avoid risk. Let content creators pay their own bills. If they put out quality, they will succeed.
