Default "Blu-ray roadmap stretching out for at least the next five to ten years,"

Quote:
Blu-ray sales to top 100M in '09

Tuesday 24-Feb-2009 7:51 AM "Blu-ray is here to stay," says industry research firm

Sales of the Blu-ray format seem to be surging despite the economic downfall. It's being forecast that the format will top 100 million sales worldwide in 2009 according to industry research firm.

"Blu-ray is here to stay, with a lucrative roadmap stretching out for at least the next five to ten years," says Futurescope.

"Last year in the US alone, BD video retail sales increased by a whopping 320% to 24 million units; and we're going to see momentum continuing in 2009, with over 80 million disc sales forecast," it adds.

"BD disc sales continue to expand into all major markets and genres although to date the business has gravitated towards new release titles. In particular, the action adventure genre dominates, appealing strongly to the young male technology adopter, which also closely matches the PS3 owner profile."

And what of all the talk of Blu-ray being killed off early by downloads?

"Although movie downloads are making noises in the marketplace, mainstream adoption will be a much more gradual process, with our projections showing that 12% of US consumer expenditure on home video will originate from online in 2012, with a slightly lower proportion in Europe," reckons Futuresource.
I tend not to pay much attention to the 'forecasts' which pop up every few months but upgrading and repurchasing a large portion of my DVD collection, as nice as the BR alternative is, sure can be a pain in the ass. And costly too.

Not sure I'm too keen on going down the same route in a couple of years time again. I certainly won't be doing so if BR is eventually replaced by digital downloads but were a new optical medium to be introduced will we be expected to double (treble, quadruple, etc) dip again?

Actually, can BR/1080pTV/resolutions even be drastically improved upon to make a new format worthwhile?

Gosh I really hope Blu-Ray exists for at least 5 years. Here's to hoping for at least 10 years.

i dont plan on re-upgrading my blu-ray collection when the next format comes out unless its atleast 10-15 years down the road. and even then i wont adopt it for atleast a year or two if i do adopt it

1080p is fine with me, it wont get MUCH better unless the screens get much larger than what i have and plan on having (i'll probably never go above 60 inches unless things change), sure it would look better because by then the Quad-HD tvs will be out (2015 is the date im hearing)
but regular 1080p will suit me just fine for along time

Edit: it also suits my wallet just fine

I really hope Blu-ray will last us some time ... I don't want to have to reinvest in a new format every 5 years. The switch from DVD to BD happened already quite fast in my opinion.

HD TV's is what brought the change on, people needed a way to store HD content to go with it. I don't see the industry / Broadcast TV changing to a new format anytime soon... Blu is here for a long time.. And don't even think about internet streaming taking over.. I have a DSL line and the quality I get from Netflix is way below VHS quality.. Will be quite some time before they can match Blu Ray quality Video and SOUND over internet and will they ever be able to supply a speed fast enough for everyone... everywhere? I don't think so...

Wink Blue-ray or something else??????

I'm thinking maybe 5 to 7 years or so then I wouldn't be suprised to see Blu-Ray replaced by a super SD memory card or something like it.

It would get rid of the reliance on the moving mechanical disk/laser setup in current use.

With the advances being made in miniaturization of solid state memory devices I don't think it will be too many years until it could happen.

1080/24P blu-ray has huge potential which is not fully utilised by many content providers. As I see, sub-optimum transfer processes and inferior original material camouflage the full potential of the technology for many cases.

Blu-ray has the capability to fully utilise very large home theater screens and produce a breathtaking picture. I cannot see an upgrade to blu-ray for a foreseeable future. Perhaps 15+ years.

I think Blu-ray has a long time to go before it becomes an obsolete format. The only way a new format is introduced in five years is if a game-changing technology came out of nowhere that no one currently has knowledge about. An example would be universal and free wireless broadband that could be easily implemented with unlimited download limits.

That story was comforting to hear. With all this talk about the economy going down the toilet, I can't help but think of how it can affect Blu-Ray's fate (plus getting a job after leaving school, but that would be out of place on this particular thread ). Here's hoping Blu get about 9-13 more years. Seriously, it can't get much better than Blu, unless people get movie screens installed in their homes.

Ditto. If all they offer is repackaged 1080p, then what is the difference? It is simply repackaged blu-ray.

I would be interested in 4K HDTV and movies. But the player would have to be backwards compatible. I would gladly sit my blu's beside the next format on my shelf. But double-dip from blu-ray to 4K? No way. Well, ok. Maybe for The Polar Express and Total Recall as both those transfers suck nard.

The economic slump certainly is slowing down BD adoption. But that is a good thing as it takes longer before players hit market saturation. Thus a longer shelf life.

Well, at least this is a forecast, with some numbers. Not a declaration like the download camp seems to always do.

From them it is: 'Blu-ray is about to be wiped out by downloads'

Absolutism is the sure sign of desperation.
