Red face Just starting my set up

Hello i am new to this website. I found alot of interesting threads here and thought i would join and ask a few questions since i'm just starting off on my HT set up.

The tv i purchased is a Samsung 52" Lcd 1080p LN-T5265F
I have the RM6750 Polk speakers

16AWG Enhanced Loud Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Wire Cable - 50ft
High Speed HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Cable 28AWG - 6ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated Connectors) - BLACK
12ft High-quality Coaxial Audio/Video RCA CL2 Rated Cable - RG6/U 75ohm (for S/PDIF, Digital Coax, Subwoofer & Composite Video)
i purchased all those cables from monoprice.

I have the HD/DVR box comcast cable.

And i am currently saving up for a onkyo 606

I have money just not a bunch to spend on the setup so i had to buy everything piece by piece.

When circuit city had the out of business sale i even purchased a couple blu-rays

Does it seem like i'm on a pretty good track?

And My big question is which i see goes back and forth is...What blu-ray player to choose from.

I don't play video games due to lack of time. And don't really want a console in my living room. But would a PS3 be the best bet right now? Should i wait, Or is there a good stand alone out there. Where the load times are good and you can easily update the firmware so you can play any movies you want and be dependable.

Thanks for reading. Any help is Highly appreciated.

As Far as Which blu ray player,If your not going to play Games then you can get a standalone player since your reciever will do the decoding all you need is the cheapest one,I have the sony bdp-350,you can find it around 250.00.You might want to check the sony 550 as well,Has been very cheap time to time and welcome to the forums

Welcome Blu Puma!

Yeah, I think you're on the right track, but you know of course that you will now get a serious case of "upgraiditis" at least once a year?

A few years ago I would have said get a PS3, but now that the prices for standalone players have come down, you can get one of those for less money. That's not to say the PS3 isn't a good BD player, because it definately is and still considered by many to be the best option.

Just set yourself a budget and look around. Ask questions (just like this post) and we'll help you out with our sometimes "fervant" opinions.

This is a fun hobby, so welcome to the club!

John

If gaming or its functionality as a media server is not a priority, the PS3 is probably not the best value now for a BD player. There are lots of reliable BD players now from different manufacturers. Which one you pick depends on your personal needs and wants from the player. Some want superior dvd upconversion and others want BD-Live capability for example.

There are some standalone BD players that are cheaper then a PS3, but I still feel getting a PS3 is worth getting over the cheaper BD players.

I understand that you may not have time for playing games, but remember some of the other things the PS3 offers and that brings the value up.
It is a media entertainment center:

1. Downloadable HD movie player or SD movies
2. Music player: CD and/ downloaded MP3's
3. Slideshow for your pic's

There is more, but to me I like downloading the free demo games .. lol or the small games that are not in stores.

I agree..... I have a couple of PS3s, but if I were buying today (since I don't have any games) I'd buy a stand-alone.

Just updating. I went out & purchased a PS3 today. Metal Gear Solid 80GB bundle. I'm not really into games but i like to play madden or racing sometimes so i figured why not. So now i have everything but the receiver...Saving up for a onkyo 606..seems like what alot of people have here or started with...I am saving up...so far 200 dollars saved...but i think its 400 tho...I have 2 of my polk speakers hanging on the walls to each side of my couch and the cables running thru the walls to the back of the tv area.

I'll take pictures when i get everything together finally...Til then i'll be back if i get stuck

with the PS3, you can always look at other receivers that accept PCM, since the PS3 will do the decoding for you
