Default Looking for an AV rack...

I guess I don't know where to start outside of big box retailers which may not have what I'm looking for.

I do know what style I'm looking for though, and maybe some of you can point me in the right direction.

- Glass tops
- Can hold up to 80lbs
- 19" or more depth
- 5 to 6 tiers
- Non obtrusive (it just needs to hold gear)
- Good breathing space between tiers

Bonus points if available in Rosewood

Anything else I'm missing? First time shopping for furniture outside of a LazyBoy!

I hate to say this - but most of them are pretty bad, when you start going vertical. They're shallow - 19" is pretty much what you find, very few at 20" or more - and they rock back and forth like crazy, even when you spend money.

I've seen units at $700 and more that are pretty bad, no kidding.

Lower horizontal aspect units are much stronger, and generally better quality. Be careful. Look at furniture stores. Even stuff from Magnolia and other higher-end places left me scratching my head.

Wow... I had no idea AV racks would have such issues. Maybe a DIY rack is going to be the better alternative then. I'm just not sure where to purchase and how much tempered glass would be.

Thanks for the reply.

crazyBLUE has a really nice looking equipment stand.

Other companies to look at are Salamander and BDI for higher end HT furniture.

If you are looking to do it yourself, contact your local glass company for your shelving. I made a mirror for our bathroom a few years ago, and the local company was very helpful and willing to work with different edge types and even gave recommendations and suggestions. I had a very good experience.

If you explain what you are doing, they should have someone available to make sure they do not sell you something that will break under the weight or temperatures of your equipment.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.
You can always do what I did. Check my gallery pics. I used an existing closet and turned it into a media rack.

This is what I have.. looks great and it's solid.
Bush Universal Audio Tower

Bush makes other versions of the tower with various wood trims as well.. just have to look around. They also have horizontal if you decide to go that route.

Thanks for the links and thoughts!

I think the ones that I like don't support the weight per shelf or are too expensive. After skimming through some websites, the one that has the specs and looks also comes with a large price tag. Damn near $900.

Does anyone know of a rack similar to the one shown above but a little friendlier on the wallet?

I noticed that after I posted that pic... Only visible problem is that your Emo sticks out quite a bit and I can't tell if your shelves are all glass or just the top. Otherwise I'd say we'd have a winner there crazyBlue.

The EMO sticks out 3 inches & yes every shelf is glass !! The fact that the amp sticks out don't bother me at all considering what the system sounds like !
If I buy new speakers for my fronts so I can BI-AMP them there will be another amp on that PIER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Good breathing space between tiers

I just picked up the rack at the attached link for my basement HT room. This can also be purchased with glass shelves and additional shelves in 7" or 9" can be added. I don't see rosewood shelves as an option, but cherry looks close.

These are my requierments to a tee.

Deeper then 19" though. I do not want amp's etc sticking out the front. Not a good/clean look IMO.

Look what I found. The iRack.

Awesome!

I might seriously consider a DIY project though. Vibration is my biggest concern at the moment.

What are those shelves rated for?

I just found a killer deal on an AV rack, but the shelf limit is 50lbs.

I plan on getting that very same Emotiva, so just curious.

Anyone else push the limits of what their racks can hold?

Check out the tier in my gallery. It is also nice and sturdy for something so tall. 6ft 3in high - 23 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep.
