Question PS3 Internet Connection

Alright so the only way I can play online is if I keep an unsecure network open which is horrible so I refuse to do it anymore after 200 people were on my router. I have a linksys router and have it set to wpa-psk for password and everything but I cant seem to hook it up online? HELP someone please!

Can you set up your router to use WEP protection? My PS3 (when it was wireless) had a great time being online through a WEP connection. It's not the most secure wireless encryption, but it's better than no encryption and will probably keep those knobs off your network.

WEP security is virtually useless. There are instructions available on the internet that allow even a novice to break it in a few minutes. WPA is the only way to go.

If you can't get onto your PS3 to talk to your router with WPA-PSK, it probably means you're setting something wrong on the PS3. Like your password is just slightly mispelled. For setting up this stuff, it has to all be exact.

don't be silly, just open a DMZ for your PS3's current IP extension. it'll be as if yuo're going from PS3 to the modem. tossing out any and all NAT issues.

not liek you haev to worry about malware getting into your PS3 via crash bandicoot racing online, or whatever it is you play.

I got every device in my house locked down via the wireless MAC filter and on WEP, and I'm not broadcasting my SSID. Yes, WEP is not the greatest but considering some of my older devices don't support WPA I'm not really gonna sweat it. Personally, I think you're giving way too many people credit for hacking into an Internet connection.

I use WPA and have no issues with my connection... except if I don't use the connection for 20-30 minutes, it disconnects and then reconnected a few seconds later.

Why not just restrict access by MAC address?

gotta agree with septimus prime here.
WEP is useless, WPA is more secure but even it can be exploited in minutes to a novice 'hacker' determined to not pay for his own internet.
the only real network security is MAC filters.

And people wonder why identity theft is on the rise.

A lot of people have this "it couldn't happen to me" attitude.

It can and does all the time.

There are so many people that think they don't need any security. They're easy targets. And whats more, when they get hit, these people typically have no idea that it even happened. And make no connection between that and the bad stuff that happens to them.

This isn't just paranoia on my part. I'm a network security professional. These kinds of attacks aren't just a hypothetical situation to me. I've dealt with the real deal.

I'm curious how a novice hacker or any hacker is able to break WPA? WEP was a broken security protocol to begin with. It re-uses RC4 one time pads. Which, as the very name suggests, must not be re-used. It's a simple matter to deduce the pattern when a one time pad is used a second time. It becomes possible to break the encryption without ever determining the key.

But WPA has no such brokeness. WPA with AES encryption especially is the strongest protection currently available.

Your MAC filters, on the other hand, provide virtually no actual security. Observing which MAC addresses are allowed through and them spoofing them is not difficult.

So I'm afraid you have it quite backwards. WPA is the security that actually works. The rest of it is pretty much pointless.

Oh, and just to be sure, not broadcasting your SSID also does absolutely nothing to protect anyone from attacks.
