Default Amityville - Truth? (For CIVIL debate only)

Everyone knows by now that the book and movies were HEAVILY exaggerated. But as for what the Lutzes said REALLY happened to them... nobody can prove it one way or the other. This is a place where people can present points and counterpoints CIVILLY. No flames, please.

Hmmm,

I don't know. I never read the book and if I saw the movie I must have been 8 or something.

Don't know.....

I remember reading somwhere a while back that they were given many chances but always flat-out refused to take a lie detector test. I think George Lutz passed away not too long ago and he stuck to his story to the end.

It is hard to know at this point. I suspect something might have happened that was out of the ordinary, but many of the circulating claims appear exaggerated by the family.

i've seen the old/new movie and read the book, completely disturbing that something like this could actually happen (yet i still don't believe it). apparently the address of the house has been changed to not discourage visitors and this is what it looks like today:

psh, i'd live there

Maybe to bump it so it does not fall off the page.

You gave nothing to the thread, so you could be asked to answer the same question, Mr. Forum Cop.

As for what happened, I have seen some stuff and read some stuff, and I dont think it has much to do with anything in terms of the second family.

I think that for MANY people, the historic significance of the area can cause some personal phobias and hallucinations/feelings/etc to surface. I am the kind of person that gets "feelings" from being on battlefields from WWI/II, walking past where I have seen people die and homes where people were murdered... But I dont think there is any ACTUAL connection between what I am feeling and what happened. The only connection is what happened and me knowing it happened.

For example, we all drive through cities and down freeways. People die in these areas all the time. It is HIGHLY likely that if the place you live in is in a city and built 50 or 100 years ago, someone died in it. In NYC every damn hotel has had a death... nothing crazy there...

The problems only come up when someone hears about what happened, or they claim to have had a "feeling" and then find out. If they had a feeling, why were they still there? I call BS.

These people, IMO, were victims of there own problems and reactions to something that did not exist.

Actually, about the time the movie came out, George and Kathy both took seperate polygraph tests, and they both passed.

That said, the books and movies are all terribly exaggerated...

And yes, sadly, George and Kathy are both dead. They did always stick to their story. They even said it followed them to California for a bit after they moved.

false...i watched an interview a while back where one of the lawyers admitted the story was made up to let the dad pleade for insanity. "hearing voices" = lesser sentence. and thats all. lol.

ps. there is a site out there with pics of the real basements, seen it about 3 years ago.

I saw it too.

And yes, the lawyer said it was made up... one lawyer, who it didn't happen to. Actually, he tried to get them to do a chapter about their experiences for his book (which led to the book deal with Jay Anson). Obviously, it WOULD help Ronnie's case... however, Ronnie only mentioned that he "heard voices" once, and that was at the pressuring of - that same lawyer.

On the other hand, said lawyer has plenty of motive to lie and say it was a hoax... bitterness towards the Lutz family's refusal to have a chapter in his book done on them, for one. Besides, how many "normal" people would hire a lawyer who had an officially acknowledged belief in the supernatural? It could be better for business to have everyone believe it was a hoax.

(Oh and also, people do live there now, it's private property. The Lutzes mentioned that the "evil" followed them to California when they moved, and no supernatural incidents have been reported by new inhabitants)

Some of them, yeah. Though with the minor exception of Part II, they're all entirely fiction. Part 8, Amityville Dollhouse, is my current pick for worst movie ever. Part 6, Amityville: It's About Time, was actually alright. Directed by the guy who did Hellraiser II, actually.

that's what i was going to ask...how much "fact" vs fiction they are based on (if any).

ALL of the movies are very exaggerated... the original is the closest, but it's still way overdone. Part II is very loosely based on the DeFeo murders. VERY loosely. After that, it's all made up. The remake especially barely had anything in common with what the Lutzes said happened. There's a great site about what the Lutz family said really occurred here:

Ever read about the TCM and how it is a "true" story?

It has a whole gang of crimes that they draw from, shove them all in a story and add some excitement...

Very cute.
