Default PS3 Disc Auto-Start

Since one of the more recent firmware updates, my PS3 (backward compatible 80 GB model) won't automatically play a disc any more. It was going by default to the "what's new" under the PSN network icon. I did a search for this issue and read about turning off the "what's new" feature. I did that, but now every time I power on my PS3 by sliding a blu-ray disc into it, it defaults to the "playstation store" under the game icon. I've checked and double-checked and disc auto-start is set to "on". Could someone please advise how to get the auto-start to start working again. I did a search for this, but the only thing I found was what I posted above about turning the "what's new" feature off. Thanks to anyone who can help.

And by the way, I do have the most recent firmware installed.

Yes. I've been having the same problem since the last firmware. It is so annoying. I did not see anything said about it;thus, I thought people like it this way.

Just like you, I would like a fix for this.

I used to turn on the PS3 and go to the bathroom or put some food. But now, I have to be there to select the BD.

I thought the problem was solved when I found the advice about turning off the "what's new" feature under system settings, but now it just goes to the playstation store under the game icon every time. It's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it still bugs me.

That's really weird. When I got update 3.01, I had the same problem. But I turned off the "What's New" feature as you did. It autoplays for me without a problem. I have a 40 GB model, but that shouldn't make a difference as it's the same OS.

Have you tried calling Sony? Maybe there's something else we're missing.

No I figured I would start here first in case it was something simple I was overlooking, like a setting.

Question for you guys...do you have your PS3 set so that it automatically signs in to PSN? I seldom use mine for anything other than updates, so it does not sign me in automatically. Perhaps you can try turning that off (if you have it on).

Yes. Mine automatically signs in. The only reason I have it set to do that is so it notifies me automatically of available updates. This has only become an issue since the last firmware update though (or maybe the one before it). Used to, it would sit there off, and I would slide a disc in and it would power on and automatically start playing the disc.

I'll try turning that off though and see what happens.

Yeah, try turning off the auto sign-in and see if that takes care of it for you. I can't think of any other settings that might impact that.

On an unrelated note, I just checked out your gallery. Awesome job on the wire management, by the way. I like how the surrounds just sit there without any visible wires.

Thanks. I was just looking through the settings for the PS3 and I don't see an auto sign-in setting anywhere. I disabled the internet connection and tried it again with the same results. The only difference was it wasn't able to show me anything in the playstation store.

What do you do if you forget your PSN password?

I haven't forgotten it. But it is stored on the PS3 anyway, all I do is select sign in. On the XMB I just go to the section for internet and PSN, and it brings up my user ID and password, but instead of signing in, it prompts me for permission. I set it this way because it interferes with the internet connection on my laptop if I enable auto sign in.

I'm sorry, I'm out of ideas right now. I'll take a look at it when I get home. I'm sure it's something we're overlooking because mine starts up right away every time when I load a disc.

If you go under BD settings or game settings there is an option to set auto play on or off.

Mine use to automatically start the game or movie and I had to turn it off thru that setting.

The good news is I remembered my password. I forgot this is on that requires a number. Anyway, I have some other things to work on so I'll mess with it more later. Thanks for your help.

Mine still autostarts since the latest update, but I'm not sure why mine is different?

You should be able to adjust everything in the XMB menu settings. You shouldn't need to log into PSN to adjust anything.

I agree. I'm theorizing that the problem Fireman325 is having stems from the PS3 auto signing in, and bypassing the disc autostart feature. This may not be the root cause of his problem, but it's the only difference in our settings as far as I can tell.

I'd try this. Maybe when the firmware enabled showing the "What's New" screen it disabled the Auto-start option. So when you disabled "What's New", the Auto-start didn't get set back to enabled.

The only auto-start setting I can find is under system settings. I've turned it off and back on again. No luck. If the PS3 is already on when I put a disc in the auto-start works. If the PS3 is not on and I put a disc in, it powers up and goes to the playstation store under the game tab. For the life of me I can't find where to disable the auto login feature.

I'm at work at the moment so I can't help much. If you're still having issues later today when I get home I'll play around with my PS3 to try to figure this out.

Aha...that is where we are different. I always start up the PS3 first by pressing the PS button on the controller and then insert the disc. It always autostarts this way for me. I must have missed that you were talking about autostart when the PS3 is in standby mode. Sorry.

I'm sorry for the confusion, but yeah when I put a disc in the console while it's in standby mode is the problem. But this is what's different too. Before when it was in standby mode and I put a disc in it would power up and then slide to the disc icon and automatically begin playing the disc.
