Thumbs down The Wonder Years! What's the hold up?

I was real little when this show started but I grew up watching it's reruns, and have been waiting years for them to hit disc. 11 years ago they released a lame 2 disc with different music and that was it. In July of 2006 they announced the hold up was the music rights but they where working on that. It's been almost 3 full years since than, and I can't find any news! Is there anybody out there who knows anything more? This was my favorite show growing up, and they don't even air repeats anymore. I miss my Wonder Years!

We will never get the original versions. I'm sure the hold up is STILL the music licenses and I bet whenever they finally release this almost all of the music will either be missing or changed.

Heres some news, very old to say the least but its what the hold up is
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Wonder-Years/6045

Quote:
HTML clipboard Scott Lieber, with the Denver Post, looked into some of the issues preventing The Wonder Years from being released on DVD. It's no surprise the music in the series is causing Fox some headaches - how far have they gotten, and when can we expect the set? You'll have to read the article for answers.

A few points from the story to keep in mind:
  • 2 previous single-disc releases from 1998, which suffered from music replacement due to rights issues but originally sold for under $10 each, now go for between $75 and $200 in a typical online auction or used DVD sale.
  • Even though Fox Home Video stated over a year ago that they had Wonder Years season sets on the radar screen, Lieber's story says that, "...full seasons of the show remain locked up, as costly music licensing has postponed their release."
  • Fox knows how desired this release is. Per the Denver Post story, "We know it's something we'd like to put out. We know that people want it out. Consumers are waiting. Fans are waiting. We talk about needing to tackle it..."
So what's the actual status? We'll leave you hanging, and point you to Scott's article for the answer. Thanks to Scott for sending us the link and letting us know it was posted (and for using my quotes in his write-up).

One of my big 'wants' as far as dvd's. Its a shame to see something like Miami Vice get released (with all the music in that)...but Wonder Years has never made it out...full season wise.

Someday it will happen.

There are a few sites where you can buy the whole thing (as jwbud said)..and are fairly reasonably priced.

Haha that was actually my news source and the article I referred to in my original post mentioning the 4 year old article, crazy that is still the only news.

Winnie Cooper was Danica McKeller. Her sister Chrystal McKeller played Becky Slater in the famous Kevin Arnold/Winnie Cooper/Becky Slater love triangle of 1969........hahahaha Anyways check out this:

Danica McKellar: Actress and mathematician. We know her best as Winnie Cooper, the dark-haired love of Fred Savage’s life on TV’s “The Wonder Years.” People who study physics probably know her as Winnie Cooper, but they might also know her as coauthor of a scientific paper that proves a theorem that has come to be known as the Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem.

P.S. Winnie Cooper might be a vampire who doesn't age??

How come only TV series have a problem being released because of Music rights?

Because artists decide as the years go on they need more and more money, it's why wonderful musicians like Metallica sue their fans. I mean that made me love them even more. It takes true love of your craft to slap fans in the face and say "I NEED ANOTHER SOLID GOLD BIRDBATH" and since than I knew Metallica and other bands who continued to ask for more money would always be my favorite.........you see things like this just make you feel deep down inside, that these are the Wonder Years..........

Oh what would you do, if I sang out of tune.................

Because home video rights were never purchased when the song was licensed, because no one ever thought it would be necessary

Because it's a lot easier to license music for a single movie than it is for a show that has what, like 100 episodes? Figuring each song has at least a few songs... that's a lot of money.

If the show ever comes out on DVD, you can expect either

a) the music to be replaced

or

b) the DVDs to cost an insane amount of money

The bootleg DVDs that have been sold on random sites (like eBay), I think are just copies from when the show aired on ABC Family channel, so the quality is less than ideal. I think.

I remember when they had this problem with Freaks and Geeks but eventually got the issues resolved after a few months and got the show out. But it only had like 16 episodes. Still a favorite of mine that went way before it's time. Though it is great to know they have all become pretty big stars from it, especially Rogen, Franco and Segel. Not to mention Cardellini, Phillips, Starr and even Daily who has been on Bones for the last year.

This issue about music rights is why we don't see Beavis and Butthead released in DVD (or Blu) packages. How awesome would that be?

I would love to see Wonder Years released, but yeah, it seems like there are some major hurdles in the way.

Music was changed also in the Birds Of Prey DVD release from last summer.

That being said in the end it doesn't matter to me if it come's out or not. This show got old rather quickly for me. Every week the kid was having a life changing experience, I mean come on we call it a life changing experience because you have that once in your life, not every week on your way to the park playing a baseball game. I do hope it come's out for the fans but I will not be buying it if it does.
