Default A Movie that Caught you off Guard....?

Often when movies are announced that they will be released many of us, if we think the movie will be interesting, will start to look for and watch trailers for the film. We start to get an idea from the trailers what the movie will be like. Of course, the trailers are for marketing and can make a film appear one way, when in all actuality, it is completely different. What movie did you go see in theaters or rent and when you watched it, the film turned out to be different then you expected.

Here are some films that when i saw they were different then I was expecting... (Yes, I enjoyed all 3)

Defiance
Speed Racer
TDK

I do not want this to turn into a "I hate this film etc thread"

I never had any desire to watch The Color Purple. Don't know why. Just seemed like it was going to be to long and boring. When I finally watched it I said to myself "This is one of the best d*** movies I've ever seen."

+1 also i thought We Own The Night would be about 2 brothers, one cop, one criminal would be duking it out but instead, the bad brother ends up
[Show spoiler]becoming an undercover cop to catch someone else
i was really shocked how oppositly they advertised this movie, but still good

Lots to choose from but I'll say Casino Royale because it was so surprisingly good and such a change for the Bond franchise. When they say reboot it generally doesn't pan out to be better so it was a great surprise.

I avoided Howard The Duck and 1941 because they said it was spielbergs biggest flops and i ended up loving these two movies!

Batman Begins

After Batman and Robin and Batman Forever, I remember thinking great another piece of crap. Assumed the trailers were misleading again. Never so wrong. Batman Begins blew me away.

Iron Man is another one for me. I thought the trailers made the movie look stupid. And with the I Am Iron Man music playing. It looked like it was going to turn out to be another Daredevil, Elektra, Punisher. Well just another let down.

If that's the Falco reference I think it is, a tip of the cap to you, sir. Nice job.

Cool Love and Hate

Rent, Ghost Town and Love Actually are all movies I thought I would hate but I ended up loving all three of them.

On the other hand, based on the trailer, I thought The Spirit was going to be awesome and it ended up being one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Likewise, I was really fired up about Quantam of Solace because I loved Casino Royale, but Quantam was very dissappointing. There was no plot, the movie started out with one purpose and then they got sidetracked on some different mission and never said anything else about their original mission. It was just hard to follow and ended up not being a very good movie. It was worth seeing but it was nowhere near as good as Casino Royale.

Taken...

....I went in expecting a sci-fi adventure from Steven Spielberg about UFOs and Aliens, and was UTTERLY DISAPPOINTED when I found it was nothing of the sort!

...okay, it was a good movie though.

Seriously though, I'd have to say The Aviator (scorsese) caught me off guard, because I was expecting another long boring biopic, but instead I found it to be entertaining and intruiging throughout, as I felt DiCaprio played a brilliant Howard Hughes. The musical score was also simply fantastic, so I was shocked to find that I actually really LOVED a movie that I fully expected to be boring as hell.

V for Vendetta was another movie that was different then i expected. It seemed that it would be real comic book-ish, but it turned out not to be the case. I enjoyed this movie as well.

I will agree with the above poster on Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Batman was a great re-boot and James Bond took the franchise in a new direction that i really enjoy.

Shoot Em Up - TOTALLY misled by the picture that the trailers painted. I didn't really like it the first time I saw it in the theaters because I was expecting something better, but after I watched it again a year or so later, I like it a lot more.

Righteous Kill - The trailer made it look pretty awesome. Al Pacino, Robert Deniro, come on, you can't get much more badass than that. But it pretty much blew. Especially with one of those cheezy
[Show spoiler]"it was one of the good guys all along"
crap endings

The Spirit - The trailer didn't let you know that the movie was gonna be over the top ridiculously stupid and kinda weird. It looked like kind of a cool comic book crime fighter movie

The Matrix - I did not go see it in theaters, I was never a fan of Keanu Reeves and when I first saw the trailers I just look very corny. When I finaly saw it I was truly surprise by the story and I much I loved it, I even forgot my dislike of Keanu for about 2 hours The next 2 movies sort of brought it back but that is another story

V For Vendata - I was not expecting a whole lot of this movie and I was truly taken by surprise by it. I never imagine I was going to be taken so much into the story. This truly became a huge surprise for me, I wasn't bored at all during the entire movie

Kung Fu Panda - I never like the other Dreamworks animation. Shrek was so-so for me, I detested Ice Age and I can't even tell you what I think of Madagascar (it's a family forum) I was forced into Kung Fu Panda at one of my friend's place who blind bough the movie on BD. Well I loved it, it was fun, full of little cliche to Kung Fu movies and it wasn't as horrible as the other Dreamworks movies I saw.

As already mentioned a couple of times, V For Vendetta. It was much better than I thought it would be.

Hancock also took me off guard. I went to see this on opening weekend, and only expected a comedy. Was I ever wrong. A really good movie though, IMO.

Gran Torino - The trailer didn't do anything for me but I watched it and it was incredible. It was funny, well acted, directed and just a fantastic film overall.

Jumper - The trailers looked really cool & the premise sounded awesome but once I watched, it was a very disappointing and way too short sci-fi flick that screamed of studio interference.

Across The Universe - Never thought in a million years that I would enjoy a musical but this movie was great. The usage of Beatles music was flawless, the story was really good and the movie was just excellent entertainment and surprised me a lot.

These are just three movies in recent memory that have surprised for better or worse.

WALL·E completely took me off-guard. I should have given Pixar more credit, as they have never disappointed, but when I saw the tidbits of WALL·E here and there, all I could think of was Johnny 5 and some sort of cheesy, low-key, run-of-the-mill, robot with a personality type story.

WALL·E is one of my all-time favorite movies, and spectacular on BD as well!

Bingo. I was about to say Zodiac (which I still agree with) but Begins, by definition, was a movie that caught me off guard. I was blown away by TDK but I had no idea Batman Begins was ACTUALLY going to be good, despite the initial buzz.
