Default Not worth it

I got a 42 in. Phillips around October. At first it was for my xbox 360 and the difference was night and day with the games. Soon after I got a ps3 and started getting blu-ray movies.

The pq was impressive. I never stopped to think maybe it wasn't that much better than dvd. I also didn't have any blu-ray movies that I also had on dvd To test it out.

Lately I've bought musicals on blu-ray that I owned previously on dvd. Across The Universe seemed better but with dvd I hadn't watched it upscaled. Sweeney Todd I actually checked and there is barely any noticeable difference from the dvd to blu-ray. And it's not even a bad transfer.

I decided to really test it by watching High School Musical 3. Not only is the pq demo quality, or very close, I've seen it multiple times on blu-ray so I'd know the difference. The difference was noticeable but still small imo.

I've came to the conclusion that blu-ray isn't worth it. People say if you have a uber speaker system the sound is way different. That might be true but PQ is really what matters to me.

The difference ranges from almost nothing to fairly noticeable at specific parts and that isn't enough. It should wow me going from 480 to 1080 but apparently upscaling is incredible or something because it doesn't.

Oh well, I just paid more on 60 or so movies. At least some of them were on sale... kind of pissed about Pinocchio though. The dvd looks the same as the blu-ray and I paid for price.

Honestly.... You need a tv that is AT LEAST 50" before you are going to reap the benefits of 1080P. Even with a 50" tv.... you're going to need to sit within 8' of it to see any difference between 1080P and 720P. Multiple studies have proven that a screen any smaller, or viewed from any greater distance... the human eye just isn't capable of discerning a difference. The truth is that LARGE screen tv's and projection tv's are where 1080P really shines. I have a 56" screen that I sit just 7' away from, and truthfully the only blu's that usually just BLOW ME AWAY with PQ, are well done animated films like Ratatouille and Cars. And I do have multiple movies that I own on both dvd and blu to compare.

That being said..... I do notice a nice difference between the lossless audio available on blu-ray and the lossy audio on DVD... and for me that is worth the extra few bucks. Plus if I ever do get a dedicated theater room where I am able to install a projection system... I know I'll be glad to have a 1080P catalogue already on hand.

That may be true but it's BS. Blu-Ray isn't marketed as something that REQUIRES the best TV possible to be enjoyed.

I highly doubt the average blu-ray buyer has a TV bigger than 42 inches.

Do you wear glassses or contacts? Were you wearing them at the time? If not, were your eyes open? I don't know, maybe you were expecting too much but I can't why Blu-ray is not good enough.

The change was awesome for me, and I only have a 720p Vizio LCD.

It's not. Maybe on this forum it is, but for the general public, it's not.

Regardless, sorry you do not enjoy the blu-ray upgrade. Hopefully something will come along to change your mind at some point.

I don't know, maybe my upscaling is not set up correctly or something, because people always say "such and such movie looks amazing upscaled" and I watch it and I'm like , but DVD is pretty much unwatchable to me compared to blu-ray...I mean, once I've adjusted to a movie after 30 minutes or so, it's not too bad, but there is a huge difference in blu-ray and upscaled DVD on my 42" tv.

Most people have at least one HDTV. My grandparents just replaced every TV in the house with an HDTV. HDTV's are the norm now and it's always been normal to have more than one TV in your house.

You should goto the Optometrist. You obviously have vision problems. Or you are purposely trying to incite arguements.

I think it's the latter.

Yes, you got me. I'm a troll. My plot is foiled.

I get the feeling people rarely watch dvd's upscaled. There is VERY few dvds upscaled that are "hard to watch" or whatever people say.

I have a 40 inch TV and the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is more than obvious.

Ether your TV is needs some kind of calibration that has never happen any where in the world before.

Or more than likely you need your eyes tested.

I smell troll.

I've been here for at least six months and have tons of posts. If I'm just now trying to piss people off I'm one lazy ass troll.

Everyone here is so defensive and argumentative. It makes me think everyone can't be as satisfied with blu-ray as they claim.
