Default Current DVD + DivX to get HD? Is it possible

Just wondering if you used a codec like DivX and current DVD technology, in theory would it be possible to get HD video? I mean DivX is all about compression, but could it not be used to get HD, taking into account an average DivX movie is well under 2gb in file size?

Matt

The goal of the new DivX codec is to get HDTV length of the Blu-Ray disc on a simple DVD. So, it's not in theory, it's real !

PS : XviD is far better than DivX

Default divx

I've read somewhere that 90 min. HD can be placed on regular DVD
but i thought downloading films like divx is piracy

Not only is it possible it's a commercial reality. You can buy movies using the Microsoft codec. There are a few catches, they must be played on a computer as I don't think there are any DVD "decks" that can play them, and you must live in the US or Canada. Anyone can however download the sample clips, providing you have broadband (or a lot of time) as they are about 100MB [url]http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx
even with all the format conversions that I have to use as my video card does not support 1280x720 (1280 x1024) and the projecter converts back to 720p the image is awsome. BRING ON Blu Ray (hopefully HD will have merged)!

There are players that can handle DRM over the internet.

There are also movies available in WMVHD in Europe. They are DVD9 720p. They are also not the best in terms of quality!

Cheers!

Exactly. The movies are so bad also... There this movie : TAXI 3, which is a sequel of TAXI (a film about a man who custom his Taxi... Very very stupid...), it's available in WMV HD but there's not interest... It's really good in term of resolution but in the picture quality *sigh*, it's GRANULOUS to death... just like the original DVD

Taxi and Taxi 2 are actually two of a small handful of French films I like. Haven't seen the third movie though. If you want to see a stupid movie watch the American remake of Taxi.

You like them ? As you wish... The third one is just a commercial sequel with Santa Klaus in rollers...

I think you're right about the American remake of Taxi... That must be a big s**t...

(We don't have much good films I think but we're really good in comedy ones !!! )

Default technoligically possible, but not economically

Its possible to use divx on DVD. But the dvd players dont have the codec. And it will be impossible changing everyones dvd players, or customers not buy new ones for the same old technology.

Maybe you can send me a PM with some French film recommendations? Don't want to take this thread any further offtopic. My faves are Amelie and Le Pacte des loups.

Yeah..

So you can ADD more codecs in the future, might be handy...

They better! Blu-ray discs have the ability to be futureproof (at least for the next few years) whereas HD-DVD discs do not. This is a huge marketing advantage. The BDA would be foolish not to make them upgradeable from the start.
