Default Under Seige appears grainy in various parts

I just got Steven Segal's "Under Seige" BD movie. Various parts of the movie appear to be grainy. In particular, the scene where the band is playing in the mess deck and Commander Krill is in the dress getting ready to go see the Captain.

Anyone have this movie and does it appear to be grainy? This is the second one I got from Amazon and they both look grainy at the same spot.

No need to return your movies due to grain. If you are seeing grain, it is in the movie, which has been carried over faithfully to the Blu, and the director intends for you to see it.

Sit back and enjoy the show!

Why would the director intend to show the grain?
Why would most of the movie be clear and just grainy in some spots?

It would make sense if it's grainy throughout.

Some directors like to use grain in their movie to give it more of a rough look. Not sure why the grain would come and go though, that IS weird.

many movies are actually shot with different film stocks for different scenses, also different lighting can affect how the grain is perceived on the movie as well. A movie won't look identical the whole time.

as wormraper said it depends on lighting conditions and film stock. and guy to this website to understand why grain is there. educate yourself so you wont be blindly bashing movies that have excellent transfers and duplicating the original grain. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...ris062408.html

In the old days, Director's used to 'cheapen out' on night or dimly lit shots by using a variety of measures. As an example, in many older films, they used day for night. Contrast was reduced considerably so they didn't have to light night scenes - or work at night. Nowadays, you'll find some films like Under Siege, to be grainy in darker scenes. That was usually because they didn't want to change the film stock they were using during day scenes, usually because of limited budgets. So, darker scenes had to have the apeture of the lens opened wider to allow more light in, creating a 'longer exposure' but in doing that, those darker scenes come off grainier. Still, Under Siege does look the best it has ever looked but you'll find the DVD had the same problem areas. It's that old AV saying... garbage in... garbage out.

Grain is as controversial as tinted films and while there are more reasons for grain in films like director's intent, it all comes down to budget or creative license. Film is an art form and you have to love it for what it is, not for what it isn't.

Check out U2's Rattle and Hum, there's none of that nasty grain in that one.

Grain is not always Director Intent. Most of the time it goes with the Film Stock (cheap). Usually they don't use more than one ASA for low budget movies because it cost less. High ASA film show light grain in day sequence and high grain in dark sequence.

Sometime is because it different stock all together.

Shooting a film is not just pointing the camera a someone and pressing a button. There's tons of not controllable things and even more before digital era...

Yes, there is visible grain in Under Siege on Blu-ray. In fact, the movie was very grainy when shown in theaters. The Blu-ray shows signs that some grain has actually been removed from the original image.

OP...I get what you are saying, becuase the DvD kinda looks better than the Blu-ray.

Grain is not a bad thing though and is mostly the product of the mixture of lighting set and the f stop on the camera as well as the type of film used.

The only place I'd really COMPLAIN about grain in Under Seige is when Erika pops out of the cake. Of all the places to NOT have beautiful, lush, magestic film grain....THAT is the place.

Not always...far from it really. The following releases come to mind:

Patton
Gangs of New York
The Longest Day
28 Days Later
The Dirty Dozen
U2: Rattle and Hum
The Fugitive
The Italian Job
Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon 2
Crash
and the list goes on and on and on...

Oooookay.... lots of unhelpful responses here.

The point is that the OP was returning movies to Amazon thinking that an exchanged copy would have less grain.

Whether you are a grain hater or a grain aficionado, I hope you can agree that grain never varies from disc to disc on the same encode. Honestly... the snarkiness on this site sometimes...
