Default PS3 1.8 brings out screen door?

I see screen door now where I didn't notice it before. I have a 720p LCD (Sony HS50). The firmware made the picture much sharper and now I notice SDE. Happen to anyone else? Guess its time for a 1080p LCD or LCOS projector.

A sharper image may make the SDE more noticeable.
Did you try turning the sharpness down on the TV?
Also if you move further away from the TV do you notice the SDE disappears?

Sharpness is down all the way, and yes further back the SDE is gone. I might try a little defocus and hope the picture is still sharp.

Actually one thing I did, was put on my glasses to watch it as sharp as possible, and I think my brain picked up on SDE, I can see it without glasses now.

After seeing what the Sony VW50 can do, biting the bullet might not be so bad.

I wonder if what you're seeing it's either now that the 720 pixels are sharper (more delineated between themselves so you see the 720 pixels "pixelaation" ( as the 1080 -> 720 edges are represented sharper?) Or you're seeing downconversion artifacting more clealy? I don't see screendoor effects on 1080 unless I get very close and start seeing the fill around the pixels..

I should note that I have 118 diag screen and sit about 12 feet away. When I did see he SDE effect, I quickly ran up closer and notice it was the pixels I was seeing. I think the cleaner picture makes them stand out. I wonder if a 1080p lcd is good enough or if I should go LCOS/SXRD/etc.

I can see screendoor on a 120" 1080P LCD setup at 12 feet if that gives you an idea. If I were you I'd check out 1080P LCDs in person before you buy anything, but don't expect them not to have screendoor at that size and viewing distance. You might have to go DLP/LCOS to avoid it if you're sensitive to it.

mmm watching a 10 feet diagonal screen with 720p is like watching a 15 feet diagonal screen with 1080p
(not counting any degradation in quality from the 1080->720 conversion, if there's degradation in the downconversion, the 1080 equivalent quality screen would end up bigger )

To have an idea how a 1080p display with the same exact pixel technology would look on a 10 feet screen from your sitting distance, go back to 18 feet while looking at the 720 10 feet screen. If you have no room to stand up that far, use a mirror positioned at 12 feet (on your seat, facing the screen) with you standing at 6 feet in the middle between the screen and seat with your back to the screen, looking at the image in the mirror

Nice theory deci, but the reality is that the fill factor will vary depending on make/model. You'd still have to check out the model in question you're intending to buy, unless screendoor disappears way before you hit the 18ft mark.
