Default Star Trek: TOS question

Okay, so the original series is going out on blu....well, at least the first season is.

I am one of those who around 8 yrs ago, bought the dvd versions that came to about 4 per disc. I have 40 disc in my collection. I am trying to streamline a bit.

I am sorry if this has been asked, but contemplating buying season 1 on blu....does it contain the black and white episode that was released on those individual disc (I am getting old for the name of the episode escapes me)?

It was called The Cage and it was the first Pilot filmed, before William Shatner joined for Where No Man Has Gone Before, which is the second Pilot, made 2 years later. Parts of The Cage were integrated as a sci-fi flashback in the 2-part Season 1 episode The Menagerie. When The Cage was first released on video (VHS/LD era), apparently the only complete source at the time was a black and white element, so they spliced the color sections available on The Menagerie with the remaining black and white ones. Later they found a complete color source and released it on video (I have it on LD and on the individual DVD). I don't see The Cage on the episode list on the press release of Season 1 (but The Menagerie is listed, of course), and on DVD it was released in conjunction with the last episode of Season 3, Turnabout Intruder. I would expect it to be included on the Season 3 set, and I always start my Star Trek viewing with it

Btw Seasons 2 and 3 on Blu-ray have been announced in Europe with their red and blue covers.

That would be The Cage, with Jeffery Hunter, as Capt. Pike. Paramount has been putting that episode last in each of the DVD releases to date. So, i would assume you wont get The Cage until season 3 is released.

However, The Menagerie will be on the season 1 set. Thats the original pilot, cut up, and used to make a 2 part episode. A very good episode in its own right!
