Default DTS to DD

I have a new PS3 but an old Onkyo DD 5.1 receiver. When playing a BD that's English DTS-HD Master Audio, my receiver reverts to pro-logic 2/0. Is there any way to get DD 5.1 from the DTS track? I would think that the DTS can be recoded in the player - after all, it's giving me 2 channels.

And WHY don't they include the English DD 5.1 as an option for those of us without DTS!? I really don't want to buy a new receiver (now that I just dropped $400 on a PS3) and I don't see that anyone sells an external DTS decoder anymore. I guess if I want surround sound, I'm just going to have to learn Spanish or French or Portuguese (those tracks are all DD 5.1).

PS3 doesn't bitstream DTS HD-MA audio but you can have it sent as PCM

back in the early dvd days we saw the same thing.
some studio's went with dd 5.1 a few with dts.a few years later they all started putting both dd and dts on the same disc.
these new audio codec are different, and take up and lot of space on the disc,so i don't know if will see both audio codec on one bd disc.
i did notice the top gun bd does have both dd true hd and dtsma.

You are correct in that DTS and Dolby Digital can be encoded on the fly by the PS3. But that's mainly for games and not for anything else. I think the game developer has to pay Dolby or DTS for the capability to encode the game's soundtrack to DD/DTS. Not all games have the option to do both. Most use DD only.

Movie studios are not paying for the capability to re-encode DD on the fly from a DTS soundtrack because there really isn't a need. Receivers that have DD-decoding only are REALLY old in consumer electronics world. In fact, to find a brand new DVD player that only outputs DD only (there was a time that DVD players can ONLY output DD since DTS' codec wasn't finalized in time) would be next to impossible.

You must've missed out on some DVDs then. New receivers with HDMI input for audio and video passthrough are relatively cheap. Some are even purposely built for PS3 in mind since the PS3 doesn't pass DTS HDMA/Dolby TrueHD bitstream. The majority of the newer receivers you'll find have these two new codecs built-in.

Apart from costing money to include both soundtracks, they also takes space and bitrate headroom which may cause picture degradation. One codec should be enough if the encoding are done correctly.

^^^^

Keep in mind that it isn't "only old equipment" that don't do DTS.

Most HDTVs HDMI inputs will accept either PCM or DD, they will not accept DTS.

A lot of software DVD playing programs will also only do DD out of the box and you have to purchase the DTS decoding.

Only DD and PCM were mandatory on DVD. DTS was an option. ALL studios released in DD and Universal (& the indie Image Entertainment) put out DTS only discs.

Only a few have both codecs on the disc, and these days the number of releases of DTS on DVD is getting smaller and smaller. Quantum of Solace is the biggest release that I've seen both tracks on there in a while.

Top Gun is a special case, where they put the original 1986 70MM sourced 5.1 track in TrueHD and a remix made in 2006 in 6.1 for the DTS-HD MA.

The reason studios these days can use one or the other (or both) is because both DD and DTS decoding is mandatory in the BD spec. Both lossless tracks will have the lossy versions as backup, but the lossless codecs themselves are not mandatory.
