Default So is this normal?

I rented TDK to give it another shot, cuz to me, it's only about a 7 or an 8.

Anyways, I've got my Sony picture setting at "normal". All inputs display the correct aspect ratio, however The Dark Night flipped from scene to scene...meaning in one scene it would be full widescreen with no bars, then in the next scene it would go to a different ratio, and I'd have the bars at the top and bottom.

What's up with that?

the scenes that fill up the screen are shot in imax, the other scenes use a regular camera

if its a dvd it depends on your settings of the player to play the movie. but i don't understand how it go widescreen and then flat at once? can you specify.

By flat do you mean full screen without bars? I am assuming so.... To answer your question, and I will use The Dark Knight as an example since that is what the OP is asking about, the film changes from full screen to multiple aspect ratios with black bars, due to the way that the film was shot. The director used different cameras in the dark knight, and that is what you see. IMAX cameras can capture more image and at higher detail, that is why the opening scene and the batpod chase scenes look so awesome, because of the imax camera. Anyways, someone else can give you better detail, but that is a simple understanding of it. Hope that helped. And by the way, many films on blu-ray change their aspect ratio while the film is rolling.

Only the Blu-Ray is like that and that pisses me off because it keeps flipping.
