It has probably been asked before but I am a huge Trek fan. I would like to know if the TNG films will be released on blu. If so, any idea as to when? Also I know it's early but any rumors on the release date of 11 on blu?

Actually I think you are the first to ask...........................No. No announcements yet. Just hit the search button, or the release date, or ....

Still wish I could see the much fabled directors cut of First Contact. I'm actually one of the only fans of Insurrection. That would have been a better way to say goodbye, Picard remaining with Anij. |

The original editing and the effects shots for TNG were done in 480i video. You would have to re-edit every episode and redo every effects shot to make it worth doing a Blu-ray release of the series.

Next Gen was shot of film but the special effect were done on video. Now in order to get this on BD they would need to redo or find all of the video tape shot of the FX and re-mastered them. I think it would be either very expensive or not possible if the video masters are no longer available. |

Now if there was an easy way to re-render all the special effects @ 1080p, then it'd be a little easier, assuming all the EDLs from the original episodes are archived somewhere. If they had to re-generate all the special effects from scratch, then that wouldn't be worth the time/effort. Although it'd be nice to have some not so cheesy and poor effects in the first season... |

All the "FX" shots from the OS would have been shot on film — no computer-generated FX back then. Although I'm sure some of the FX in NG were shot on film with miniatures, etc., a large portion of the exterior space shots would all have been done @ 480i. Another problem would be all the shots of live-action mixed with FX, such as Picard's ready room, etc. where stars are replaced over green/blue screen from the original film. |
