Default 120 HZ Question

Hi guys, just a quick question. I recently purchased a 46" Sammy with 120 HZ. When I watch Blu-Ray flicks the picture is amazing. But it looks the same whether the 120 HZ is set to High, Low or even off. How do I know if it's even on? Is there a way to tell?

First, welcome to the site!!

Next, what you mean is the motion enhancer or whatever Samsung calls it. Your TV is always 120 hz, regardless and this cannot be turned off. What you are actually setting to high, med, low or off is the motion enhancer.

As far as verfying whether you have this turned on, you really can't. The TV only displays the source of the material that you are watching. Sometimes the Sammy displays it in the upper left corner when you change channels or put in a blu, but once that goes away, you would need to check the menu.

As far as looking the same, that seems a little suprising, as it should have a "soap opera" looking effect if it is on.

By the way, you really should turn the motion enhancer off when watching your blu's so that the material is displayed as it is intended to be viewed.

Nope. The Motion Enhancer is just an On/Off choice. The 120 HZ is off, Low, Medium and High. And honestly, the picture looks the same whether its Off or on High, or the Enhancer is On or Off.

Do you mean 120Hz Motion Plus? Isn't there a demo mode - ie. can't you set the Motion Plus to Off/Low/Medium/High/Demo, and in demo mode it splits the screen into 2, the left half with motion plus on, and the right half with motion plus off, so it should make it easier to see the differences - assuming your Samsung set has that demo mode.

You can tell what the 120Hz Motion Plus mode is set to by, after setting it, going back to the Picture Options menu. It should say: 120Hz Motion Plus: Off or 120Hz Motion Plus: Low, or whatever other setting it's set to.

I'm sorry, but I can't let this go, as your rebuttal will only lead to more confusion about a 120 hz TV.....the 120 hz is just the refresh rate, and you CANNOT turn this on or off, low, medium or high, that is the auto motion plus.

Please read the numerous threads I have attached below to reinforce this point:

I just bought a Smasung 40" LCD 100Hz for the bedroom and was amazed but the PQ. I already have a 50" Panasonic Plasma. But what suprised me the most was how the picture on movies looked. It was almost the feel of a documentary.

The TV accepts 1080p/24 from a BD player so there is no blur or judder.

Yes it does, make sure you turn off the auto motion plus when watching your blu's so that the TV is refreshing properly.

Thanks. I did that while watching Bourne on BD. But you might also need to do it with HD films over Sat. I also watched Predator on Sky HD last night. While the picture quality was amazing I felt that I was looking out the window. Its kinda jarring.

Yeah that will happen as the program you are watching in HD is only being sent out with a refresh rate of 60hz, thus the auto motion plus will interpolate when it is on, adding frames and basically creating judder when there are fast/panning scenes. However, I leave it on for almost all sport or cartoon programs though.

Hmm...I have the Demo mode, but I don't have the screen split in half the way you described when it's on Demo.

But isn't that why we want HD and 120 HZ? I love the "looking out a window" look while I watch Movies. You feel like you're right in the Movie!
