Default Taste of members is growing

Have you noticed that there has been a trend at Bluray.com? The taste of its members is growing! People are experimenting with seperates, going to higher-end gear and becoming more informed. This is what I wanted to see take place here. I just didn't expect it to happen this fast. How many of you have been affected by some ones knowledge such as Big Daddy, JJ, Crackin, and Betaman? What drove some of you into upgraditis - especially during an economic recession? Finally - how many of you can see the dividens of good equipment coupled by good technology - because good technology with out good gear (especially on the sound end) leaves one with a shakey foundation indeed. If you have a good sonic foundation - you can even enjoy DD or DTS programing (let alone what lossless will sound like ). I've always stated that DD or DTS coming out of a good system will sound better than lossless coming out of a bad one - foundation is the key.

<---Got all that he was mentioned

But yes, I have noticed! I made the remark earlier that I am done recommending stereotypical setups to people. I want to see some Marantz, Denon, Pioneer - or entry level receivers with preouts that can be combined with amps from Audiogon - subwoofers not just from eD and speaker manufacturers - and of course, putting PSB, Paradigm, Monitor, Revel, and Swan on the map.

The days of Onkyo + Polk + eD will soon be replaced with Marantz + Swan + Hsu!

I want people to realize that you don't need a 5.1 or 7.1 setup right away.

That progress is better than splurging on lesser equipment all at once. The joys are bigger when it is all done.

Heck, I finally went the separates way! Just awaiting their arrival!

I demand everyone who reads this post to go out there and tell me some product types and lines from the following now: Sonus Faber, B&K, Acurus, Anthony Gallo, JL, Miller & Kreisel, Nordost, and Parasound. Go!

I want people to stop spending money on movies and put it towards their systems! There is no excuse!

I thank everyone, I have learned many things from many people. The best advice to give, is to go out and listen to everything available to you. I still think Polk can offer a tremendous value to budget conscious consumers, but for a bit more you can get something great! As far as subs beyond eD, I would look no further than HSU, Epik, and SVS. While keeping eD in mind every step of the way!

Thanks for everything guys, I hope I have given at least as much advice as I have taken.

Well I've been here just a little less than a year, only been posting for the last couple of months and I agree this is a great community and there is so much to learn about different gear and combinations - I think that being able to show your set ups really helps in getting the general public to realize that you don't need to be an audiophile and have to spend big $$$$$$ to have a nice sounding system.

What I like most is that those with the big $ systems don't have that "audiophile mentality" and are willing to share their knowledge with us on a one to one basis

Kudos to blu-ray.com and all it's members

I got tons of help when I redid my home theatre. While it is not by any means the greatest system in the world... it has made me a very happy man listening to movies in lossless audio!!! Thanks to everyone!

2 yrs ago, I had a bose acoustimas 16 powered by an onkyo 501. I thought it was the best thing in the world for movies; until my wife and I started to watch concert DVDs. The bose were so lifeless that I had to turn my TV on to add musicality to it After that, I was like f*ck this s**t! !!!I'm getting a better system.

I started out with a HTIB from Sony and thought wow this is great, then I made a jump to a low budget HTS, Polk's plus Onkyo. I was really amazed at the difference. I know I have a really modest setup now, but I'm young (25) and less than a year into real HTS. My future setups will certainly make my current setup feel plain, but its a joy right now.

I still disagree with JJ and all those who say to build it 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, then 5.1, then 7.1 order or some combination thereof. I think a modest 5.1 (and when I say modest if you are just jumping into HD audio spending less than $1000 for equipment) for most people is such an improvement over HTIB or stereo TV speakers that to spend the time waiting and the cost to build up a system over time is a waste. Having said that, I think for my future setup in a dedicated HT room, I will buy piece by piece.

A good analogy is car restoration. Yes, you can buy the car, strip it down, take it apart piece by piece and build it back up again, but in the mean time its nice to have something you can drive.

I wanted to chime in... just 3 months ago I was so close to pullin the trigger on the Klipsch quintet SL's. The last purchase I made on speakers were Klipsch KG series and they held up very well, so I thought Klipsch was the end all be all to "high end " gear. Little did I know.

Not bashing Klipsch , but this site allowed me to evolve in to the a brand I would have never considered . Paradigm. I couldn't be any happier with the decision.

Most important of all is the information that is available. It gives a foundation of the process of how audio works, and allows people to make an informed decision on a product. Also, offers ideas of how to manage the gear you currently have and utilizing it to its fullest potential. Man to look back from then to now is like WTF was I thinking.

sincerest regards.

I remember when I had a 20" tube tv hooked up to computer speakers. Nice computer speakers, mind you. (Around college when I moved A LOT)

About 2 years ago, I got an Insignia 42" and an HTiB.

2 Months ago I found Blu-ray.com and quickly moved to my current system in my sig. To my eyes and ears, a HUGE improvement. Our eyes and ears are satisfied until they experience something better. (Or read about it here )

I also want to thank everyone for the ongoing advice and I only hope I can add some back in eventually.

Oh, and the projector is a few weeks away and a complete sound upgrade towards the end of the year...

I too have learned so much from this site, I went from a 65" CRT Hitachi to a Samsung LN55A950, upon being truly amazed by this tv I have now added a Denon AVR-1909 and two Def Tech's BP7006 towers, now I'm going for my center speaker...little by little and many dollars by dollars I will truly have what I feel is my ultimate HT set-up.

Like most of us I joined the forum (July '07) because of my interest in the Blu-ray format. Over time and quite gradually I discovered that many many people were also very much into music. And I'm happy to see that this is a section that has been growing by leaps and bounds.

As a result of the advice by many members, a lot of people are expanding their search for HT gear into brands they would never have considered in the past. The Gallery section has aided that a great deal in my opinion, as we are now able to actually see equipment others own and ask questions thereof.

One of the things I've noticed as well is the increase in the level of knowledge some of the newer members have and immediately share. I think Blu-ray.com is going to grow ever faster in the months and years to come and I couldn't be happier about that.

Another very happy camper here! I lurked for about a year (yes, a year) before becoming a member this past January 09'. I read, and read and read lots of posts from all of the usual suspects (i.e Big Daddy, Beta Man, crackinhedz, aramis, etc....) and went from a rear projection with a HTiB to what you see in my sig now.

I have purposely saved money and skipped going on vacations, keeping my absolutely crappy car, etc....to buy my HT gear and to feed the disease of upgraditis. It all started here and with the many helpful and knowledgable members we have. I'll never have the knowledge that some of you Blu-Ray "Gods" have, but I have gained enough confidence and knowledge, that I feel comfortable providing advice on many subjects to other members now. This sight has motivated me to keep reading and learning about HT, as it is always evolving and improving and I don't want to be left behind.

I agree with JJ, that I want to learn more about seperates, front projectors, audio acoustics and HT construction and get away from the stereotypical set-ups. Heck, I even built myself a sub riser thanks to Big Daddy.

My current/prior hobby was modifying my bike (not a 10 speed and I would consider myself to be a bit of a wrench head) and getting it up to speed, investing thousands of dollars and hours of labor in doing so in the last 4 years. I have now told my wife that I am thinking of selling it (I should get an easy $15,000 - $18,000 for it) so that I can go all in with a dedicated home theater. This is all becuase of this site. Consider me a member for life! Thanks again to everyone here!!

But that's the fun part....the learning. Even before you are ready to buy - you can always go window-shopping and just listen Keep doing what you are doing and keep reading and listening

Ditto!!! Netflix people....Netflix (or similar service)! What good is a huge blu-ray collection going to be when the next storage medium comes along? I guess about as much good as my laserdisc collection thats boxed up in my basement. I've learned my lesson.
