Good timing with Riget: Exodus coming out, and hot on the heels of December boxsets of other European auteurs - Haneke and Zetterling.

Not sure why there’s a picture of a butt on the cover art though

Must have been an intern

Odd, we also have nipple on the cover, not sure what Criterion is going for here

Director of cheap shock content b-movies masquerading as high art. Sick of this trend in arthouse, that he helped invent.

This has to be the first time I’ve ever noticed a transfer being from a 3K restoration.

and I agree the artwork for this set is fugly, yet exactly what I’d expect.

Yeah, wassup wit dat? I'm thinking it may have something to do with the source elements not being ideal enough for a full 4K resto, but why not just do a more common 2K? So odd.

Some of Epidemic was in 16mm (blownup to 35mm for theatrical prints) so it probably wouldn't benefit significantly from a 4K release.

So, are you pre-ordering this boxset or waiting for a sale?

For me, it's pre-ordered for Day 1. Hope there's more where that came from, too.

Mysterious Object at Noon also had a 3K restoration, which was in 3072 x 2160 pixels as the booklet in second run blu-ray says. The DCP for Mysterious Object at Noon was made in 4K.

There's an Arri 6K oversampling to 3K scanner:

https://www.arri.com/en/camera-syste...ns/arriscan-xt

Quote:
Custom ARRI designed ALEXA XT dual gain CMOS area sensor with multichannel readout. Monochrome sensor with IR masking.
- Highspeed microscan system for sensor positioning
- 3K (3072 x 2160) native sensor resolution
- 6K (6144 x 4320) native resolution using microscanning
