Default Battlestar Galactica worth a Blind Buy?

I hear great things about this series but I have not seen it myself. I considered buying it, but $244 seems like a lot for a blind buy (I'd rather use that money for a Wii or something...but then again, if it's a great series I'll love, then there we goes...or should I just netflix them?

Yup... I am in the same boat.

I want to take a gamble as I have heard good things... BUT... a little iffy.

Fantastic series... a gritty feel to it; I imagine that the Blu Ray release will be awesome. That said, I won't be upgrading as I don't see myself sitting through it again anytime soon. Given the investment, i'd check out a couple of episodes first.

Has it won any awards, or is it just one of those great shows *cough* The Wire *cough* that is ignored?

It's scifi, so the awards are limited to Saturn Awards and the like. Though I think it won a Peabody Award for quality television.
Not well deserved Emmy or Golden Globe Awards though.
I think it's worth a blind buy if you like well written scifi.
I think it's worth a rent if you like well written drama and you aren't sure if you can handle the scifi element.

I would at least watch the 3 hour "movie" to see if you get interested. I haven't seen all the seasons, but now I'm just going to hold off and see if I can get a good deal on all of it.

I much preferred it over The Wire; not big on awards as criteria for establishing greatness; to each his own. Galactica is imo the best SciFi series ever. If you are considering the purchase because you have the coin and are partial to the genre, then I can't imagine a that you'll be disappointed... but as it's available on DVD anyway, spending $5 on the first disk of season 1 is a reasonable investment. The series only gets better.

I love sci-fi, especially if it's well written...sounds like good stuff.

A lot of people enjoy the series, including myself. Since the set is a bit more expensive, I'd suggest renting a disc or two and seeing if you like it.

This was taken from Wikipedia!!

Quote:
When the miniseries aired on the Sci Fi Channel in 2003, it was the highest-rated cable miniseries of that year. The miniseries' success led to the commission of a new ongoing television program, the first episode of which drew an estimated 850,000 viewers — an 8% multichannel viewer share — on its world premiere on Sky One in the UK & Ireland. The subsequent reimagined Battlestar Galactica TV series remains the highest rated original program in the Sci Fi Channel's history.

The miniseries and the subsequent weekly TV program have received critical acclaim. Time magazine wrote in the spring of 2005 that the new show was one of the six best drama programs on television. It would proclaim the program the best show on television in December of the same year. The American Film Institute named the show to its list of the ten best shows on television. Other mainstream publications such as the Chicago Tribune, Rolling Stone magazine, and Newsday also named the series one of the best on television for 2005. That same year, the series won a prestigious Peabody Award in recognition of its creative excellence.

In 2007, Battlestar Galactica was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Editing and Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series for the third season episode titled "Exodus, part 2" and a single nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for the back to back episodes "Occupation" and "Precipice".

In 2008, it again received the Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series award for the fourth season opener "He That Believeth in Me". The Razor Flashback webisodes also won the Short Format Live-Action Entertainment Program award and the show received another Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series.

HBO, and showtime series and BSG are perfect for Netflix. Find a show that you and your woman like and you are set.

Yea, a $250 blind buy is a little much, if you enjoy sci-fi, then you will probably enjoy BSG. I didn't get into it until about season 2.5 and had to catch up through netflix.

Yeah, it is. But I'm a sucker for owning good shows. Anything HBO is basically a day-one purchase for me, which makes my wallet weep from emptiness.

Only reason it wouldn't be worth a blind buy is a horrid transfer.

+1

However, based on the previous HD DUD release of the series it viewed as a 3.5 PQ. I will definately be purchasing this collection. Just waiting for SG Atlantis, Friends, and Seinfeld now

I would think there would be some sort of blu-ray standard that all companies would have to reach, where the picture is at least a certain percentage over the DVD counterpart...oh well...but Battlestar with a great pic would even persuade me even more to check it out through a purchase...I gotta stimulate the economy somehow, right? Big Obama on campus aint gonna do it

Awesome, awesome series and worth all of the accolades bestowed upon it. I don't own many TV shows but this one was something special.

The only drama series that I enjoy more than BSG is LOST. It's an amazingly well written, acted, produced... well, it's amazing all around. I would say, if you're a fan of sci-fi, it's totally worth a blind buy. $244 is a prett decent price considering you're getting 73 episodes, a 3-hour miniseries, and a TV movie all on Blu.
