Default Is Sony going to put BLU-RAY drives in all of its laptops in 2008?

I wonder if Sony will start putting BLU-RAY drives in all of its laptops next year. Toshiba is planning on placing HD-DVD drives in all of its laptops starting in 2008.

Blu-ray is 1080p, MANY laptop screens(any mfgr) cannot display 1920x1080 picture.

For data, I could see it, but for BD movie playback... no

Why not? I won't buy the DVD because I'm also going to view it on my laptop.
It's good. It'll make sure hardware manufacturers will make an extra effort.

I think only 15-17" laptops with 1900x1200 display will have an option to upgrade to BD-drive in the next couple of years.

I somehow doubt many people would hookup their laptop to their HDTV, just because their laptop came with an HD DVD or Blu-ray drive. And how many of these would have component or HDMI/DVI+HDCP connections to do it?

Still, that's about 10 million Toshibas and 5 million Sonys, going by 2006 numbers.

actually, MANY laptops CAN display 1920x1080 and higher (mine can do 1920x1200) SO, for the price they ask for their laptops, they BETTER have Blu-ray included with a nice lcd monitor with high resolution.

Right, so can mine!
But mine is an AR series.

But what about the N series?
TX?
SZ?
C?
FZ?
FE?

No... too many that cannot display the 1080 picture.

As I stated, maybe for the data storage.

Most will likely not have the graphics HW and the HDMI port to connect.
HDCP is likely to not be there either.

The AR series can and does have HDMI & HDCP and the graphics HW to pull it off.

Welcome to the club, Toshiba. Sony's had laptops with BD drives since summer last year:

http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/...ownermade.html

It even records to BD-R and BD-RE - I doubt Toshiba will offer writing capability. Some US laptops:

Top 5 US computer vendors % market share: Source IDC

Dell 31% Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors
HP 22% Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors
Apple 6% Blu-ray Disc Association Board of Directors
Gateway 6%
Toshiba 4%

Kind of puts it in perspective.

One thing I don't understand is why they sell the HP here with just an HD-DVD drive (no BR yet, in Korea).

And HP is supposed to be BR?

Display
Screen or Display Technology: WXGA LCD
Screen Size: 15.4”11
Resolution: 1280 x 800
XBRITE-HiColor™ Technology: Yes

While it may have a BD drive, the screen is a wee bit lacking, no?
You can use it as a player and connect to a HDTV via HDMI... but sure would be a waste to watch on that screen, huh?

IMHO the economics of putting an HD-DVD drive in all machines just doesn;t add up. Toshiba will be destroying their entry level and B2B market where price is critical as the drive is still going to cost more than the $10 it costs to put a DVD burner onboard
