Default life without blu-ray

so it seems my ps3 is deciding not to work correctly.

it started freezing on wednesday after about 45 minutes of watching a movie or playing a game. i had trouble even getting back to the main menu of the system and/or ejecting the disc.

tried blowing it out with compressed (canned) air. made sure the cables were seated properly and not binding up. made sure all updates were downloaded and installed.

and it's done it on every movie and game i've tried, so i know it wasn't just the disc. and it does it at about the same amount of time every time.

i knew i'd bought an extended warranty on it, but i initially couldn't find my original receipt.

by sheer luck i found it late last night (i was looking for something else and found it in a pack of photo paper, of all places).

so i got it registered on their site and they are sending me a shipping label to send it to them so it can be repaired.

i've used my ps3 every single day since the day i bought it.

i've probably over-used it since i use it for both games AND movies. i've heard and read that it's bad for a ps3 to do that a lot, even though it's built for that.

so i'm sending it in to be repaired and don't know what the hell i'm gonna do without being able to watch blu-ray or play a ps3 game. i'll probably go crazy(er).

sorry, just had to vent for a minute.

I feel your pain because i had to go through this when my previous PS3 got the yellow blinking light. I spent more than a month without my PS3 since I had to take it several times for repair then i just gave up and bought a new one. During that time i had to use my brothers Blu-ray player and borrow his 360 to play COD MW2.

well, not gonna get rid of the ps3. if i have to buy another one i will. not a big deal.

but i will also buy a standalone blu-ray player so as to use the ps3 for JUST games and not movies. maybe that will help it last a bit longer.

One of my friends had his PS3 die on him, and did the same thing. He bought a stand alone blu-ray player for movies, and bought another PS3 just for games. You should get a lot more mileage out of both since they're not pulling double duty.

If there is an HHgregg around you, they usually have closeout/floor model/open box blu-ray players for about $40~$60 with a full warranty.

Generally, PS3 is build specifically as a game console, to play games in the first place! The unit is manufactured secondarily with blu-ray compatibility, which is not the sole purpose of a PS3. Experiencing numerous of technical difficulties with PS3's while playing blu-rays, for a long duration of time, is to be expected. And besides, a PS3 is not considered as home theater equipment, like a dedicated Blu-ray Player.

Iknow its not designed to be part of a Home theater unit. But I thought it was designed for both games AND movies. I know its got a the capablilities for it but wasnt aware it should be used primarily for that. that comes as a a surprise to me. I use mine as my dedicated Blu-ray player however I don't play alot of gameing time on it thought.

it has been touted as one of the best blu-ray players out there by several magazines and web sites.

but i guess like anything electronic, i just over-did it.

like i stated earlier, i use mine every single day. sometimes for hours at a time. i've played a game for 4-5 hours then went straight to watching a movie on it.

i guess i need to slow down a bit and let it rest and cool down before i do more damage to it.

i have decided to purchase a stand-alone blu-ray player, probably the oppo bdp-93, and just use the ps3 strictly for gaming.

if it does it again, i'll probably just break down and buy a new one. the one i have is the larger 80gb version. it has been a great machine and has never given me one bit of trouble up until this point. i wouldn't mind having one of the new slims, though. i like the look of them and i can get one with twice as much hd space for cheaper than what i paid for my 80gb.

it'll be weird, though, having to use one machine for games and a different machine for movies. i guess i'll get used to it.

I remember when my Sony BDP N460 went down and I had to get rid of it. Went for a few weeks without a Blu ray player and god did I miss the Blu ray experience. I never want to go through that again. I feel your pain.

got a call from the warranty company today.

they have my ps3 and it's in the process of being repaired.

they gave me a service request number to use so i can track the status of the repair (kinda cool).

and they'll call me again with a tracking # when they're finished with the repair and have shipped it back to me.

i've been using my niece's samsung i bought for her to watch movies. she doesn't use it "that" much as she's into computer games with her friends at the moment. she has a ton of movies blu-rays, mostly disney, but hardly ever brings them with her when she comes to stay for the week. it's slower than my ps3, but it'll do till i get mine back.
