I say PS3, while others disagree. There was a thread with comparison details between certain players. forgot where. also, BD stands for Blu-Ray Disc.

The proper spelling is Blu-ray Disc. No capital R.

For aesthetics and the fact I am not a gamer, the PS3 was not an option. I prefer a standalone player, and in my opinion, the Panasonic BD series are top notch.

This thread might very well end tragically......

If you're just looking for a Blu-ray player then go with a Panasonic. PS3 is nice if you are a gamer and it has a few other advantages as well such as built in Wi-Fi, but I expect more players to come with this before long. Also the new Samsungs are Wi-Fi ready and one of the models comes with a dongle attachment to make it Wi-Fi out of the box. It's really just comes down to what you looking for and what you plan to use it for.

I guess I bleed Sony blood, I,ll say PS3 if your wanting to do more than just a stand alone player, or Sony BDP-S550. Kind of hard to find, being replaced by the BDP-S560.

While I have 3 60gig PS3's, my favorite BD player so far is the Panasonic DMP-BD60. It's a sweet little machine.

I like the Panasonic BD line (own a BD30) and what little time I spent with Sony's S350 didn't reveal any major problems. The BDP-83 is going to start shipping next week, though, so I'd toss it into the mix here. It is fast (on par with the PS3, but without the potential fan noise problems), feature-laden, and easy to use.

I upgraded from a PS3 to a Panasonic DMP-BD80 and I have not looked back. I love the appearance of a standalone in my HT and I like to be able to bitstream my audio. I cannot think of anything my PS3 does better than the BD80 really.

However, I would get the BD60 if you do not need the analog outputs on the BD80. I basically got the BD80 for the price of the BD60 so that is the only reason I have it. But it does have a cool playback window that shows the codec and bit-rate of the audio/video tracks as well as HDMI video output mode. The PS3 also does this so this is not really a unique feature but it was nice to see it in my standalone.

Well since I own both a PS3 and a Panasonic BD I choose Panny. At least if your doing strictly BD playback. If you want a device that can also play games, play media over a network, browse the web, and rip music then the PS3 is #1.

Easy the PS3, it will play ALL BD's while the Panasonics play 95% of them. Just read the thread where a poster said he is having problems with the Spirit movie on his BD35. Read lower where it states the PS3 plays it just fine.

PS3 is a full proof no problems player.

I also have the BD35 and I tried all the fixes above. Honestly the issue with my copy of the spirit is that it keeps saying it can't read the disc. I played the disk already on a PS3 with no prob. Any ideas?

Everyone will have their own favorite based on needs and features.

If you want to be hand fed, go to Best Buy. It should take less than 1hr of solid research to find out what player works for you.

I am on board with this completely, both in what you have to say about a standalone and its aesthetics....as well as how this thread might end.

If you click on "players" at the top of the website, just below the Blu-ray.com banner and then click on "compare players" on the left menu of the screen that shows up. You can select various players and compare them head to head and see how they stack up on the features that are important to you.

Give me the Sony BDP-S350. So far I have had it since last November and this player has done everything it was created to do and thats deliever high quality Blu ray picture and sound playback. Of course I am biased towards Sony. A PS3 is next on deck for me.

Really, this question needs to be qualified in some ways. Do you want/need onboard decoding for the new audio formats, as would be true for someone with an HDMI v1.1 receiver or processor? Do you prefer bitstreaming those formats to your receiver? Do you want/need onboard decoding and multichannel analog output? (The latter can be a really big deal for folks with older receivers or processors that lack HDMI audio support, and it excludes a number of players right off the bat - including the PS3.) There are other questions that can dictate what's best for a specific situation, but these are big ones...

Thanks guys for your reply. I honestly think PS3. Why would you go by a stand alone BD player when you can buy a PS3 that doers much more inc, internet, photos, games and more PLUS it has a hardrive to upload things on it.
