Default Sony Ericsson president: PlayStation phone "could happen"

Quote:
Alright, rumors about a Sony Ericsson PSP phone have been around for quite a few years now, but a phone of this kind still doesn’t exist – despite the fact that lots of PSP fans would probably want one.

Well, in a recent interview with Financial Times, Sony Ericsson’s president and COO, Mr. Dick Komiyama, stated that a phone bearing Sony’s PlayStation brand “could happen”.

And if SE’s president says so, it means the company has probably given serious thought to the possibility of launching a PSP phone.

Of course, Komiyama’s reference to the much-rumored device is a bit vague:

“a PlayStation mobile, building on the Walkman and Cybershot phones, could happen.”

- but there’s surely a glimpse of hope in there for all those who are hoping a PSP mobile phone will eventually be built.
sony has said no in the past, but who knows what they've got planned

cool (old) render..

In the meantime, just install SKYPE on your PSP.

I'd love a PSP with even just a cellular data connection, after discovering how hard it really is to find wi-fi while on a road trip. I've been wondering if, now that Sony's charging publishers for downloads, Sony could work out some sort of Kindle-like deal where you can always access PSN-specific features (text-chat, game/video/music store, multiplayer) via a cellular connection for free. Normal web browsing and Skype would still require a local wi-fi connection.

If that was possible (with the two thumb sticks, the full keyboard and the iPhone interface, I would buy it without hesitation. At least up to a $550 price point. But only if it had memory cards... I dont want to be stuck with internal memory.

OTOH, it would be huge and 100% impractical without a super trooper battery pack. Anything that has any apple logo on it would be dead within minutes, and the battery would be un-replaceable with a 2 month life (or 6 charges, whichever comes first)

I have not played my PSP since I bought my Iphone. I used my PSP during my long A$$ commute to work in the SF Bay Area to play games and listen to music. The iPhone has so much more to offer especially with 3G, free video podcasts, apps, etc. I find the UI of the Iphone and iTunes just makes things simpler. As posted above why have two devices to carry around? Now the PSP just sits in my dresser collecting dust. If Sony did develop a PSP phone (not Skype) it would have to be "VERY" comparable to the iPhone before I would even consider buying one.

My mom just bought a new car. My dad complained that it did not have a cassette tape player.

You sound like my dad.

True. Bottom line for me is not having to carry two devices to achieve the same goal of entertaining me. Honestly I got bored with the PSP games and there have not been very many releases I have been interested in.

This would be ok with me but I don't want playstation to choose only one cell phone company to distribute this product (like apple did/does with AT&T) because its basically cheesy, 2 or 3 carrriers fine ,but not just one. I want an iphone but no AT&T in my area

I am guessing they are all the same (I just googled PSP phone)

the key board does not look that bad and I am sure would be thumb usable, but I guess if I had a choice, I would rather have a blackberry size keyboard that slips out then the screen.
