Default I have to ask...........

I have gotten so much great info and advice off of this board, and I truly appreciate it. I'm still not sure if I am getting the sound quality that I am supposed to be getting.

I have the Yamaha 665 AVR, Sharp BD-HP22U blu-ray player, Monitor 60's for fronts, jbl N24 Northridge for surround, Polk CS2 center, Polk PSW10 sub. When I play a BD will the AVR automatically select the best sound source/field?.....DOLBY True HD,DTSA HD Master, DOLBY Digital EX,DTS ES Discrete 6.1, DOLBY Pro Logic IIX DTS Neo DTS 96/24 or do I need to set something that I'm not sure of?

I hope I explained this OK? Thanks

Mike

Do you have the player set to bitstream? If so, the movie/player should send out the best possible quality audio format and the Yamaha will decode whatever signal it is being sent.

Some Blu-Ray discs don't default to the HR sound tracks and you have to actually go into the audio settings on the disc for the proper output. This is mainly older titles. If you didn't have the system you have (nice btw, very similar to mine!) you would need to set the Blu-Ray audio options to a lower audio output on newer discs.

The biggest reason I ask is because the dialog on BD movies sounds muffled to me. I have no idea as to why. I have to increase volume during a long "dialog scene" in a movie and then turn the volume down after that. This doesn't seem right to me.

My fronts, surround, and center are set to small. I have the bass set to the sub and the sub is set to mid range volume or slightly below.

Is this due to the audessey settings? (Or doesn't Yamaha have their own version of that?)

I have my L and R Set to "large" with a -3.5 dB offset and have the Center set to "Small" with a +1.5 dB offset.

Yamaha has "Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO)". I haven't run this yet for a couple reasons. I just got my sub and the biggest reason is that my speakers aren't physically placed in an ideal "surround sound" location. I am quite restricted on speaker placement because of the size/shape of my "great room". My surround speakers are actually right next to my front speakers. I'm very new to the "HT" scene and have learned alot from this forum as well as tinkering on my own. I figured if I ran the AUTO setup for the YPAO I'd get an error simply because of the location of the speakers.

I know I can manually do this setup. Is there, for lack of a better term, a "rule of thumb" I should go by when doing the manual setup....or is all based on my sound preference? Thanks

Mike
