It won the High Definition war almost a year ago for it's superiority in just about everything. But, everything has it's bad. And this goes for improve players, drivers, and anything directly related to Blu-ray too.
Note: I wasn't sure in what category to put this in General Discussion or Blu-ray Technology and News. The search engine was acting up so I couldn't see if anyone had post the topic already. If so, I apologize. |

The bad side is consumer apathy. I recommend to add LSD to drinking water in order to overcome it.

I think improving blu-ray is better than the talk of replacing it. But the new generation players are already doing nifty things.
The issue of space still haunts blu-ray, though not to the extent it haunted HD DVD. As long as firmware patches could modify existing players, then I say there is a need for something bigger than BD50. Even BD75 would give the space needed for every movie to have lossless audio. In short: * BD75, BD100, or greater. (Movies would need less compression and be of better quality.) * Max bit rate of 50 or 60. * Lossless audio - always. What ever happened to those BD33 discs they apparently made by tweaking a BD25? Last edited by tron3; 10-03-2008 at 01:21 PM. |

I would agree that they mandate lossless audio on all releases. If space is an issue then get rid of the extras. I assume that most people would prefer to have lossless audio over the extras. If they have to include the extras then make it a two disc set. We pay a premium and we expect the best in audio and video..

The only stand-alone player I have experience with is my S-301 so if what I am about to say has already been taken care of, please recommend the player to me.
Having said that: On the most basic level, we need to be able to simply put a disc in the player and then press play. As it stands now, if you leave a disc in the player over night and then power down, when you turn on your player the next day you have to wait for the current disc to load and cycle through a bunch of crap before you can hit eject. (simple enough request...you can even rig your PS3 to NOT auto load.) They need to bring back A/B repeat. They need to get over themselves and let us manipulate (that is skip or cue through) any part of the disc. We get it...stealing is bad...can we please skip past it now, because legally you don't have to read the WHOLE law for it to apply to you. What is someone going to say "Oh..I skipped past the warning, so the $250,000 fine doesn't apply to me. As far as the audio goes....pick a freakin codec and stick to it already. People argue all the time that PCM, TrueHD and DTS-Master is all the same...okay..so...we only need one then. I could go on and on....maybe later. Great format though. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I will be Blu until the bitter end. Later all, |

I'd like to see simpler and more clear menus. I've had many discs where I have a hard time telling what option the cursor is on because of poor color schemes. Other times the menus are needlessly complicated because they're using some underlying technology just because it's there, not because it makes the menu easier to navigate.
Faster load times and no need for firmware upgrades are also needed and probably more important for general acceptance. I'm pretty sure these will come in the not too distant future. |

+1 for faster load times. However, those load times comes on the heels of the very thing you say should stop - firmware updates. I agree we need a finalized spec, but the occasional firmware tweak will be needed and usually very welcome. |

1. just the movie without all the extras for those of us who sometimes do not want all the extra tidbits they put on the disk, would like a choice sometimes.
2. stick with one audio format, lossless of course. 3.keep the packaging simple to reduce cost. 4.get out some good catalogs, like they did for sd dvd, or bd club, so what's available out there becomes more known to the masses. |

1. All studios must build their BD release with lossless audio and encode the video with a minimum average bitrate of 30MBps.
2. Paramount should redo Shooter, Disturbia, Mission Impossible III, Black Snake Moan, and any of their other releases without lossless audio and include lossless audio. 3. Warner should redo most of their BD releases and improve the picture quality and ensure that lossless audio is included with every release. 4. BD25 should only be used for extras and not the main feature. BD50 should be used for the main feature. 5. Standardize on MPEG-4 AVC. 6. In addition to releasing the latest titles, I would ask the studios to put together a list of catalog titles and have the public vote on which titles will be released on Blu-ray. This should be done each quarter. 7. All new releases will have a maximum price of $19.95. All catalog releases will have a maximum price of $14.95. 8. Any release that was made for both HD DVD and Blu-ray should be redone and optimized for Blu-ray. 9. I would drop BD Live, Digibook, and all that other marketing crap. Rather, I would prefer that the studios focus on quality releases. 10. CE companies should manufacture an entry level BD player for $199 or less. |

Progress is being made:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=332 A 1-2 second fast eject no matter what the player is doing is also now implemented. |

Make BD-50 the standard for all Blu-ray movie releases. I realize this will get better as production lines mature and grow in capacity, but it has definitely affected many releases this year. Universal had to drop some extras to fit some movies on a BD-25.
Give consumers the option to turn off BD-Java for faster loading and wider compatibility. I haven't seen too much innovative stuff for BD-Java yet. Eliminate security stickers on Blu-ray cases. Keep the case design uniform instead of unusual packaging that doesn't blend in with the rest of them (Digibooks are an excellent example). |

The fact that you have to upgrade your players constantly to view a movie.
The average consumer is definately not going like this, it is WAY to much of a hassle for people. They have to go a computer, download the file, put it on a USB stick, update it and then view the movie? What happened to 'pop in, and just watch?!' Hopefully this gets resolved in the future, I can see this being a reason why people hold back on going blu. |
