Have this on DVD. Tupac was good, overall it was good but seen a lot better from this genre. If the reviews for PQ/AQ are high, the extras and plenty then I'd get this at around £8-10 range.

If these guys want to release more rappers in movies, hope they look toward Trespass.

Tupac was 20 years old while filming this; he looks like a baby! Omar Epps does too. It definitely does fall into the second tier of "90's Gangsta" movies for me too, but it's still a decent attempt for the genre. Will also wait on reviews, but am pretty sure I will eventually upgrade to Blu-ray.

Never seen it... but wasn't this quite controversial in its day?

I seem to remember that Sky Movies in the UK (circa 1994) refused to show it... that ring a bell with anyone?

Don't remember anything about it being overly controversial as you say but, come to think of it, I don't remember ever seeing it on TV (terrestrial or otherwise) - I've only ever watched it on VHS or DVD.

I could've sworn I read something about it being controversial (at the time video violence hysteria was always in the gutter press). Maybe I'm mis-remembering? I'm sure it didn't play on Sky Movies though (at least not back when it was supposed to).

Looks like Paramount just announced a deluxe edition with tons of supplements.
I'll wait and see what SS do, though before pulling the trigger.

Yeah, looks like I'll be getting the Paramount, which is a shame because I like supporting the smaller labels. Those extras are just too stacked. I'm guessing that the Second Sight probably won't have those extras since I assume they're made by Paramount, and this movie was released by Paramount in the US and MGM in the UK.

I have no idea why Paramount never put trailers on their extras anymore, nor allow third party labels to include their trailers as an extra. What an annoying habit.

I don't remember anything around Juice, though there was just a general air of nonsense 'controversy' about films at the time with things like Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, and (perhaps what you're thinking of here) Menace II Society being left in limbo with the BBFC, not officially refused a certificate but with distributors too concerned about that happening to submit them.

Paramount was only distributor in the US, so I believe International distribution rights were split up in each country between different companies with some still carrying those rights and other with different entity's (Its hard to find any concrete information regarding that anywhere).

Who was the initial UK distributor? This hasn't been released on video in many places outside of the US (aside from Australia IIRC), so if Second Sight was able to licence it, they probably got it from an independent company who currently owns the distribution rights. Or, it may be MGM as you said if they or another company that they acquired (like Orion/M.E.C.G, or pre-1996 Polygram) were the initial distributors. One of the two probably explains why it took so long to get a proper release there.

I just saw SS's DVD version on their site, it wears the current MGM logo on the side spine, so ether MGM themselves or a company they acquired initially distributed it there.

Now the question is if Second Sight would be using the US Paramount master, or one supplied by MGM. I highly suspect the latter, but MGM has used other companies film elements before as for the BDs of Dark Angel, MGM got a master from Paramount but with the original title instead of "I Come in Peace" (it opens with their 1990s era mountain alongside the MGM lion).

I wish the US Paramount version with all the extras was region free as this UK release will no doubt be bare bones.

What makes you think that? Second Sight are usually really good for extras.

I just assumed that Paramount would hold all the rights to those extras and they wouldn't appear on the Second Sight release. Also the Paramount release is titled '25th Anniversary Edition' whereas the UK release isn't. I hope I'm wrong though.

On a side note, I can no longer find this blu ray on Amazon uk? It was listed on there a few days ago when I checked though.
