Default PS3 vs Current/New Stand Alones

Question says it all. I currently have a PS3 in my bedroom hooked up to a 58" PZ800U. I am interested in possibly upgrading to a stand alone player as I have built up a decent system there and would like to maximize the audio/visual experience. I have a pioneer 1018 receiver so decoding isn't an issue. The unit in particular that I am looking at is the Panny DMP-BD605k at Costco, its on sale and seems to be reasonably priced, i just dont want to pull the trigger if it isnt going to gain me anything.

Thanks for your guys' help

Opposite goal, same advice needed:

How about going from a stand-alone to the PS3?

Benefits/downfalls of both??

-- Hey John, trade you...

I'm VERY far from "gamer" but like the internet access, media storage/playback, and wifi update ability of the PS3.

Don't get it for the internet, I don't know how many times websites have crashed my PS3. Using it for media/streaming, and of course games, makes it the best player in my view. I wish they'd cut the price to gain a larger audience, though.

Many of the decent new stand alones have this. Im not huge on it, i mean ill prob use it some but Im more interested in maximizing my picture and audio qualities. Ill still use the ps3 for games but this also would free me up to occasionally leave it at the gf house to play blus on my other tv.

To be honest, I don't think you'll experience any noticeable improvements in Blu-ray video or audio performance given your current setup. You might find a player that upscales DVDs better, but you can buy a standalone DVD player for cheaper if that is your wish.

Good to know about the internet causing crashes. I'm actually thinking of picking up a 40gig PS3 from ebay for like $280

My stand-alone seems to work fine. I've had to hook it up to my high-speed and upgrade it like 6 times over 2 years...

Untill They come out with a SA player that can surpass PS3 as far as load times, and also play all titles wihtout the need of a firmware update Im solidly for the PS3. That and ht efact I've kinda gotten into gaming on the PS3 as well so that kinda gears toward my favortism a little.

I had an "incident" tonight with Rise of the Lycans - My lil P1400 froze up again on start-up and refuses to play it. It does this with certain movies and has done so since I bought it. (Its updated fully) As always, my nephew's PS3 fired it up within seconds.

I getting a PS3, like yesterday...

Ive NEVER had the internet crash my ps3. (I have two PS3's)

Not sure what websites people are browsing?!

Granted, the internet experience is not as user friendly as a PC. But for simple browsing purposes its pretty good. Some websites do have issues with compatibility such as sites that require specific 'plugins' and may be reason for crashes, I guess...but ive never had a crash. But then again, I browse yahoo and bluray.com.

But most definitely the PS3 is ideal for media streaming! I cannot tell you how awesome it is to watch/listen to stuff in the bedroom without having to get up.

Theres a ton of benefits as a whole such as video/audio chat with friends and family, games obviously, Home is fun, Folding@home is for a good cause and even BD.com has a folding crew, but in terms of a media player

Benefits:

-great streaming content from PC
-PSN has movie and BD trailers for download
-looks sleaker than most SA players
-Reference VQ/AQ
-Scrolls through advanced BD menu's with ease
-blue tooth remotes/controllers are much better than IR
-Will never be an outdated piece of hardware

Drawbacks:

-Needs good ventilation/produces more heat
-makes a little more noise
-uses more energy
-No bitstream capability

Another drawback of the PS3 as a media server is that it will not play any DTS encoded audio files correctly. I have stopped using the PS3 for audio streaming and have started using my ancient D-Link DSM-320 since it plays ALL my audio files. I'm debating on whether I should upgrade to an HD version so I can stream some HD videos. I doubt I will anytime soon, but maybe once my D-Link dies, I will get an HD version.

Since I already have a PS3 and would be getting a stand alone simply for an increase in audio/video quality does a player such as the DMP-BD60 offer enough to merit having it.

Let me put it this way, say you hypothetically had both, and they were sitting side by side, which would you put your blu ray in? Which produces the best overall viewing experiance?

Hey Man if you want to buy this player just buy it ,it is very nice .If i were do as I'm doing right now enjoying both of my players.PS3 and Blu-ray player Sony BDP-S350

MY PS3 using it now for region A playback and my Blu-ray player for region B playback. In this way i destroy region playback issues once for all.

Good Luck
