Default OPPO BDP-80 Discontinued

Went over to the OPPO site and it says BDP-80-sold out. According to OPPO they have discontinued the BDP-80. Here is a copy and paste from their Facebook page.

Q
Is it true that the BDP-80 is discontinued? Why???

A
OPPO: Confirmed, the BDP-80 is discontinued

Q
Is a new cheaper BDP 80 coming? Hopefully you will still make a cheaper Blu Ray player than the BDP 83.

A
OPPO: Definitely some exciting things coming down the pipe, stay tuned

I just hope they don't stop supporting the 80. I wouldn't be very happy.

With their outstanding customer service reputation, I doubt that's going to happen. If new BDs come out that require BDP-80 firmware updates, it's going to be a massive outcry in the online community if Oppo decides to abandon the player. I suspect many of the BDP-80 owners are what you'd consider enthusiasts.

Such a short lifespan for the BDP-80, real curious as to what is coming, 3D maybe ?

I suppose you're right. I don't think Oppo would abandon us like that

That would be my guess. Probably going to be the 81 or something. Basically an 80 with HDMI 1.4a.

Noticed the BDP-80 is listed on the front page of the Oppo web site again but it has this to say, which is interesting ...

I am hoping that Oppo continues to provide firmware updates on needed. Based on their site the last one was July 2010, I will be upgrading mine tomorrow. I bought mine specifically to use for region B blu rays and nothing else. I am don't think the firmware update will take away this feature, we will see.

If they eventually stop, then I guess I will have to buy an 83 and move on. Oh well, it is what it is.

I highly doubt Oppo would stop supporting the 80, they do have the best CS out there and wouldn't burn any of their clients and tarnish their highly deserved reputation over this. I'm not worried.....too much

I just bought a used 83 last week. My plan had been to get a new 80 in a month (my b-day). I started to wonder if I did the right thing by getting a used 83 now instead of waiting, but now with the 80 discontinued, I guess I had no choice but the 83. I wouldn't of had enough for a new 83, hence part of the reason as to why I was going with the 80 and decided to just get the used 83 instead. So in the end, at least I am not paying full price for the 83 and that feels pretty good.

I think you made a great decision on the 83 I just hope OPPO doesn't become a statistic of the economy as it's hard to imagine surviving on only a few products

So, I emailed Oppo's Customer Service last night regarding future support (firmware) for the BDP-80, the following is what I received a couple of hours ago:

The core architecture of te BDP-80 is shared with the BDP-83 and the BDP-83SE. For this reason it is unlikely that we will discontinue supporting the BDP-80.

Best Regards,
Customer Service
OPPO Digital, Inc.

I think that is good news.

Now I'm curious to what else is coming from them, the 80 was perfect for my needs, but if they come up with something really cool, I'ld keep my 80 for Region B alone.

Playing region B BD's is the only reason I bought my 80, I use my PS3 for all my region A titles. I may get a region free 83 and put it in my living room and move the 80 into the bedroom with my second PS3.

I e-mailed OPPO this question.

Why did you discontinue the BDP-80? Is there another player in the same price point in the works? If so, when could we expect anything new?

Their response.

We discontinued due to slow sales of the unit. We don't have a replacement for the BDP-80 right now, we are only working on a replacement to the BDP-83, and once that's done we can look towards replacing other units.

That's an interesting yet different response ... over at another forum others are also discussing this over in the BDP-80 thread and according to the repsonses Douglas-b received it would appear that it was discontinued due to discontinued parts and the BDP-83 is also on the chopping block; which would make sense.

I', starting to think Oppo doesn't or cannot afford a sub-$300 player. This is most unfortunate as I hadn't bought an 80 yet, and I had planned on it with the intent on making it region free.
