Default Controversial Poll Thread

Who is worse, Guillermo del Toro or Peter Jackson?

It's a tough call, as I don't like anything either of them has ever done, but I think Peter Jackson has to probably take it. He's like the poor man's Sam Rami.

Question

You hate two of the best filmmakers in Hollywood? Do you like any of them, like say Alan Smithee?

Successfull doesn't always mean good.
You're a Yankees fan, aren't you?

Cute joke, though, Wolvie.

I like:

Paul Verhoeven
John Landis
Ridley Scott's old stuff (pre 1990's)
Hal Hartley
David Cronenberg
Sergio Leone
Spike Jonze
Michelle Gondry
Darren Aronofsky
Christopher Nolan
Sam Rami

You gotta be F-ing me with this poll. I think that both are fantastic directors; Peter Jackson had a lot of oscars after LOTR: Return Of The King, and Guillermo del Toro had Hellboy 2 and Pan's Labyrinth, and they were well received by critics. No poll is required, since both directors rock.

As far as Guillermo del Toro goes, I liked Blade 2, Hellboy 1 & 2 and Pan's Labyrinth. As far as Peter Jackson I enjoyed all three Lord of the rings films and King Kong. Do you hate all of their movies?

Two exceptionally gifted filmmakers, among the very best working today. I understand it says "controversial" right in the subject line, but this is just silly. Personally, I prefer Jackson, though del Toro is catching up thanks to Pan's Labyrinth. Hopefully The Hobbit films will put him over the top.

this is an interesting discussion, but why exactly does it warrant a poll? having an actual conversation is unquestionably more involving than clicking on a checkbox......

for the record it's really hard to choose between the two. i love pan's and LOTR/Kong....both Jackson and Del Toro seem to have an eye for awesomeness, not sure how else to phrase it

Neither,

I respect the work of both of them. I enjoy their films not because they made money but because they are good.

Say what you want about Smithee but you gotta admit the name has racked up a lot of credits.

I chose Peter Jackson, because he's annoying. I actually enjoy Lord of the Rings, but they aren't worth watching more than once every 5 years or so, IMO. Also, Pan's Labyrinth was good, but nothing spectacular. They both do movies that are safe bets. If someone decided to do Lord of the Rings before Peter Jackson did, it would probably be as good as long as the budget was about the same.

Just choose who you like the least, that's what I did. He's not making fun of anyone's tastes in movies. It's not like he's taking away your birthday or anything.

I think both are very good directors, but if I had to pick the one that's better today, I'd say Jackson. Jackson's special effects aren't as good as Del Toro's, but Jackson is the better story teller of the two. I dozed during Pan's Labyrinth a couple times, and though I did enjoy the Hellboy movies immensely I haven't seen an epic story telling out of Del Toro though I keep on hearing he can do it.

That being said, Jackson has only done the Lord of the Rings trilogy that really impressed me but Heavenly Creatures showed me he is more than capable of doing drama that doesn't require a fantasy setting to tell.
