Default Phillips BDP5005/F7

My PS3 conked out on me today, and I panicked and bought a cheap 200 dollar player at Walmart. It's a Phillps BDP50005/F7. I went on their site to check for firmware updates and I can't seem to find any information on it. The site just list the model number and doesn't even have a picture.

Can you guys help me?

Looks to be a Wal Mart specific varient on the BDP-5010, as the user manual link is to the 5010's.
No firmware updates listed yet, it's a very new player, it just started shipping. The 5010 version only showed up on Costco's site a month or so ago.

Philips has a pretty good track record, could you try some of the Blu-ray discs that have caused compatibility issues on other players?

e.x. Wanted, any recent Fox/MGM title (like Quantum of Solace), and Twilight

Josh, be prepared to take the player back around Fathers Day. Just speculaton but last year Walmart had this deal - any BD player with a $100 gift card. I got 5 BD movies with my GC.

I'm taking the stinker back tomorrow.

First off, Phillips website sucks. I had to call them up just inquire about the lack of information on their website, and just to find out if it was a new model and if there were any firmware updates available.

The actual player worked fine, until today when I it froze up while watching Indiana Jones IV, a scratch free disc that worked perfectly in my PS3.

The only reason I bought it was because I was having trouble with my PS3, which had a hiccup earlier this week, when it took nearly two minutes to shut down and sounded two or three beeps. When I turned it back on, I noticed that it wouldn't connect, and if I were to do anything, it would freeze. I had to go into the setting and disable the connection, and it seems to work fine. But feeling that my system's time is running out, and realizing that I only really used it for DVDs and Blu Rays anyway, I thought it was time to take the plunge and get an actual player.

I'm thinking about getting the S360 from Sony. Or even another player from Sony. The things I care most about are playback issues, customer relations, and convenient means of firmware updating. Does Sony BD players fit that bill?

Sony and Panasonic are both very good brands for stand alone players. They both continue to update older models as they need it.
If you're looking at the S360 I'd actually say get the Panasonic BD60 instead as it has a bit better DVD upscaling quality. If you're a Sams Club or Costco member the "warehouse club" version of the BD60 called the BD605 is ~$230 through the end of May.

Just a bit of information: the stand alone players don't load discs as fast as the PS3. The new 2009 Samsungs are giving the PS3 a run for its money from what I read though. Samsung has a somewhat less than perfect track record with updates/compatibility, but seems to be decent now.

Any playback issues with either of those players?
