United Kingdom The Lukas Moodysson Collection (1998-2013) [Arrow] - January 30, 2023

Coming from Arrow on January 30.

Quote:
Arrow Films

Ever since his debut was heralded as “a young master’s first masterpiece” by none other than Ingmar Bergman, director Lukas Moodysson has been hailed internationally as one of Sweden’s greatest filmmaking talents, delighting and confounding audiences in equal measure.

Moodysson’s first film, ****ing Ĺmĺl (released overseas as Show Me Love), tells the story of awkward smalltown teenager Agnes and her crush on popular classmate Elin, which unexpectedly blossoms into real-life romance; it was quickly heralded as a new queer cinema touchstone and one of the most authentic portrayals of youthful relationships on film. He swiftly followed this with the bittersweet, satirical 1970s-set Together, in which the inhabitants of a commune try to reconcile their ideals with their hearts’ desires.

Having made a name for himself as the new master of tragicomic, feelgood humanism, Moodysson suddenly frustrated expectations with a trio of startlingly confrontational works: the hauntingly bleak Lilya 4-ever, based on a real-life case of a Russian girl sold into sex trafficking in Sweden; the abrasive and semi-improvised A Hole in My Heart, detailing the messy (un)making of an amateur porn video; and the avantgarde Container, narrated in its English version by Jena Malone (Donnie Darko).

After making his mainstream English-language debut with the expansive Mammoth, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Michelle Williams, Moodysson returned to his roots with We Are The Best! (based on a graphic novel by his wife and ‘consigliere’ Coco), the charming and funny tale of three schoolgirls starting a punk band in early-1980s Stockholm.

Available together for the first time, Moodysson’s eclectic filmography can now be appreciated as the work of a singular filmmaking voice, as avowedly uncompromising and unabashedly political as it is keenly observed, deeply felt and frequently hilarious.

Wow! Just Wow! My set arrived today and I'm so excited to get stuck in. It really is a thing of beauty, elevated somewhat by the rigid plastic slipcover. I didn't see mention in the pre release details but there's an additional book in the set; an 85 page perfect bound poem by LM. I've only seen A Hole in my Heart which is not entirely representative of his work but I feel lucky to be able to immerse myself in his work with this excellent set as my guide.

This also arrived with me today and it looks to be Arrow's most comprehensive set in years. As Eibon said, it even has an entire second book that has somehow gone unadvertised.

I've given Show Me Love a watch and it is a gorgeous transfer.

It's early release of the year material and I can't even imagine what could concievably beat it.

Have been thinking a bit about picking up this release. I have only seen Show Me Love which I enjoyed a lot and especially given the new transfer and extras would be a good one to revisit.

Having said that some of the more experimental films in the set, I'm just not sure if they will be my cup of tea and this is quite an expensive set (even though it seems like a high quality one with a number of films).

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Mentioned this in another thread, but kicking myself at my own stupidity over this. Ordered direct from Arrow and managed to tag it onto a pre-order that's not coming out until the end of April. FFS! ARGH!!!

I’m still waiting for them to ship it thanks to the awesome Royal Mail

[edit] A few hours later I got a note that it shipped! Yay! Expecting it in a few weeks, though.

Just picked this up from HMV in Edinburgh. I did not expect it to be this big and heavy, on the shelf it looked like there were 2 sets. Another advantage of the plastic hardcover is those goddamn spider security things don't damage the set. The guy behind the counter said that it was "discontinued" and that they would not be getting anymore in...ever (his words) so if you're looking to get it, would do sooner rather than later.

It's Vad gör jag här (What Am I Doing Here) from 2002. First English publication. In fact I don't think much of his writing has been translated.

Anyone any idea why Arrow wouldn't advertise it? Seems to me a relatively niche release could use any bit of "and that's not all!" promotion possible! It's not mentioned on the site, the box or in packing shots. But it can't have been last minute as the boxes and the bespoke plastic covering cases would have had to be ordered well in advance.

The Lukas Moodysson Collection Trailer | ARROW - YouTube
It’s really special and just amazing that a somewhat lesser known director (at least internationally) is getting such a profound Box Set release! I watched ****ing Amal (Show me Love) yesterday (my Arrow set arrived safe & sound finally this week) for the very first time since I saw it in cinema 1998.

I kind of forgot how powerful and moving this coming of age story actually was. It’s really an exceptionally strong film and quite different to mainstream Hollywood productions. I was born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s and really discovered cinema 1998, as I moved to another town with three different movie theaters.

So I kind of saw every mainstream and also most independent films directly in cinemas between 1998 and 2005; before I only went a couple of times a year with friends and family, mostly seeing the big blockbuster Hollywood films of these years (still loving those too, but for other reasons like one would love a movie like ****ing Amal).

So these years and films remain often as very beloved and influential in my own memory. Here in Europe a cinematic movement called Dogma was very talked about during this time period and I remembered it kind of in the vain of that movement. Moodyssons films are still a bit like that in my mindset, even they are not actually part of this specific movement. Hope you find the time and right mindset to also dive deeper into this marvelous box set!

Greetings from Germany! Chris

Does anybody know if Lilya-4-Ever will be released separately?

They tend to release slimmed down versions of the sets rather than split the titles up these days.

Almost two and a half decades since Together, a sequel is hitting Swedish cinemas on October 13th, picking up on Göran and Klasse‘s life in the commune in 1999.

Tillsammans 99 / Together 99 Blu-ray. No English subtitles, sadly.

Love my Arrow Moodysson set maybe the best (and most unexpected*) thing they've ever done.

I gave up on Amazon UK shipping mine and ordered from the US and just when it cleared customs, they received stock and my UK order shipped: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Arrow-Moody.../dp/B08R5HV763

Just keep in mind that according to the US thread, a standard release is coming next year. But if anyone from the UK doesn't want to import it and wants the "premium" packaging, it's in stock

The fact that it's not OOP yet blows my mind. Definitely one of the best Arrow box sets ever.

We'd expect the standard edition in the UK too right, should they release one?
